Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Staff Accountant to join our Finance team. In this role, you'll help ensure the accuracy and integrity of Hillwood's financial records by managing day-to-day accounting activities, preparing financial reports, reconciling accounts, supporting payroll, and assisting with month-end and year-end close processes. You'll work closely with the Director of Finance and other team members to strengthen financial reporting, improve processes, and support the museum's mission through sound financial stewardship.
Key Job Elements
- Verify, post, allocate, and reconcile accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Maintain accurate financial records and general ledger activity.
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and month-end journal entries.
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and fiscal year-end closing processes.
- Prepare financial statements and ensure accuracy and completeness of financial reporting.
- Prepare and file tax returns.
- Support external audits by preparing documentation and responding to requests.
- Research accounting issues and recommend practical solutions.
- Help improve accounting processes, internal controls, and financial reporting practices.
- Train staff on finance procedures, forms, and policies.
- Provide backup support to other Finance team members as needed.
- Organizational Relationships
- Reports to the Director of Finance.
- Collaborates with Finance team members and staff across the museum.
- Interacts with vendors and employees throughout the organization.
Knowledge
- Five years of accounting or bookkeeping experience.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Experience working with general ledger systems (MIP Fund Accounting experience is a plus).
- Skills & Abilities
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with the ability to analyze and manipulate financial data.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Highly organized with exceptional time management and multitasking skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining a high degree of accuracy.
- Works independently while building strong working relationships across departments.

Staff Accountants are regularly required to:
- Communicate professionally in person, over the telephone, through email, and other electronic means.
- Move throughout the museum campus and between buildings.
- Climb stairs while carrying equipment or supplies.
- Visually identify, observe, and assess information.
- Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds unassisted.
