The Opportunity: Payroll Coordinator I
The main objective of this position is to perform a variety of support tasks associated with payroll operations, including processing wage and salary payments, auditing time entries, and scheduling garnishment payments.
What You’ll Do: Responsibilities
- Calculates and processes special checks, files unemployment forms, processes new hire paperwork, and creates summary reports for management.
- Utilizes automated time and attendance software and programs in day-to-day operations.
- Handles general inquiries regarding payroll.
- Offers suggestions, advice, and solutions regarding payroll processing procedures.
- Ensures proper resources are available for timely payment and reporting.
- Coordinates and facilitates multiple payroll processing schedules ensuring on time submissions.
- Assists in coordinating payroll-specific financial calculations and estimates for areas that may include pension expenses, compensated absences, workers compensation, post-retirement or early separation recording, and monthly and quarterly deductions and remittances reconciliation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- The Port of Virginia is a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year operation, schedule and location may vary based on the needs of the operation.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The Ideal candidate demonstrates a high level of attention to detail and brings a developing knowledge of payroll laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. They possess intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and exhibit strong customer service, time management, and organizational skills. Additionally, the ideal candidate has excellent verbal and written communication abilities and shows a strong capacity to quickly develop proficiency in payroll and time and attendance systems to effectively support operational needs. Education
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Associate’s degree in related field preferred.
Licenses, Certifications, and Credentials
Valid driver’s license; Transportation Worker Identification Credential
Work Experience
One year of relevant experience required.
