Payroll Coordinator

A well established construction company with a presence in Monterey County is looking for a Payroll Specialist to manage weekly payroll for a workforce of approximately 60 to 70 union and nonunion employees. This is a hands-on role for someone who's comfortable with the complexity of union payroll, multiple pay rates and classifications, and construction-specific compliance requirements.

What you'll do

• Process accurate, timely weekly payroll for the full employee group, reviewing time records, pay rates, overtime, deductions, and fringe benefits before anything is finalized.
• You'll handle payroll across multiple union classifications, each with its own rates, deductions, and benefit requirements, along with preparing union payroll and benefit reports and ensuring required payments go out correctly and on schedule.
• Beyond core payroll processing, you'll administer fringe benefits, employee deductions, and HSA contributions, and manage payroll-related onboarding, employee setup, tax forms, direct deposit, deductions, and benefit enrollment.
• You'll maintain accurate payroll, benefit, and employee records throughout.
• You'll also prepare workers' compensation payroll reports and supporting wage information (this role does not manage claims), research and resolve payroll discrepancies before processing, and respond to employee payroll and benefit questions professionally and promptly.
• You'll coordinate with the team member handling prevailing wage and certified payroll reporting, and work directly with software support and internal management to resolve system issues as they come up.
• The role also includes reviewing payroll reports to confirm accurate data transfer between the payroll platform and the accounting/ERP system, so comfort working across two connected systems matters.

What you bring

• Experience with a cloud-based construction payroll and workforce management platform is strongly preferred (Miter experience is a plus), though candidates with strong experience on legacy construction payroll/accounting systems such as Sage 300 CRE, Sage 100 Contractor, Viewpoint, or Foundation are also encouraged to apply. What matters most is solid, hands-on experience running union payroll in a construction environment.
