Part Time CFO St. John School North End Start Date October 1, 2026 About St. John School St. John School is a vibrant Catholic school serving students and families in Boston's historic North End. We are seeking an experienced, collaborative, and mission-driven Part-Time Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to work closely with the Head of School and Board of Trustees to ensure the long-term financial health and sustainability of the school. Position Summary The Part-Time CFO serves as the strategic financial leader of St. John School and works in full partnership with the Head of School to support the school's educational mission and long-term sustainability. The CFO is responsible for financial planning, budgeting, reporting, compliance, risk management, and business operations oversight. The Part-Time CFO will supervise [staff] who will be primarily responsible for recording billing, payroll and tuition transaction activity. The successful candidate will provide timely financial analysis, prepare board-level presentations, attend board meetings, and ensure that the school's financial and business practices align with its mission, strategic priorities, and the requirements of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston. This role is for 5-15 hours per week and the person filling the role will be required to spend a portion of their time each month in person at the school. Essential Responsibilities Financial Leadership & Strategy Partner closely with the Head of School to align financial planning with educational priorities and strategic goals. Develop financial models and forecasting tools to support strategic decision-making. Analyze and recommend tuition-setting strategies. Assist with compensation and salary planning and adjustments. Monitor financial performance and recommend actions to strengthen financial sustainability. Support long-term strategic planning initiatives. Financial Reporting & Board Engagement Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports. Create clear, concise, and user-friendly financial presentations for the Board of Trustees. Attend Board meetings and present financial reports, trends, forecasts, and recommendations. Serve on the Board's Finance Committee and participate in committee meetings and pre-board meeting discussions. Provide financial insight and analysis to support effective board governance. Budgeting & Operations Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with school leadership. Monitor budget performance and identify variances. Recommend operational efficiencies and best practices. Provide financial oversight of school operations and business functions. Compliance, Audit & Risk Management Manage annual audits and coordinate directly with external auditors. Ensure compliance with all applicable financial reporting requirements. Maintain compliance with policies and requirements of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston. Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls and financial procedures. Evaluate financial and operational risks and recommend mitigation strategies. Stakeholder Collaboration Build productive relationships with board members, school leaders, faculty, staff, families, and external partners. Communicate financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences. Support a culture of transparency, accountability, and stewardship.
Qualifications
Required Education Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. Preferred Experience A minimum of five years of school-specific experience in financial management, budgeting, financial planning, or business operations. Experience preparing and presenting financial reports to boards, trustees, or leadership teams. Experience working with auditors and managing audit processes. Experience implementing internal controls and overseeing compliance initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple constituencies, including Board members, trustees, students, families, faculty, and staff. Excellent communication and presentation skills. Ability to explain complex financial information in a clear and accessible manner. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Commitment to the mission and values of Catholic education.
Compensation
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
