Job Description

Our client, a rapidly growing real estate development, construction, and property management company, is seeking an experienced Controller to establish and lead the finance function based in Halifax. This is a unique, permanent opportunity to become the organization's first Controller, building the accounting foundation for a diverse and expanding group of companies.

Working closely with the ownership team, you will play a key role in developing scalable financial processes, implementing strong internal controls, and providing the financial leadership needed to support continued growth. 
Key Responsibilities for the Job:

• Oversee accounting and financial reporting across 80+ entities within real estate, land development, construction, and property management operations
• Lead month-end and year-end close processes while ensuring accurate financial reporting and intercompany accounting
• Establish and maintain accounting policies, internal controls, and scalable financial processes
• Perform and oversee day-to-day accounting activities as required while building the finance function
• Partner with ownership to provide financial analysis, reporting, and business insights that support strategic decision-making
• Collaborate with external tax advisors on tax planning, entity structures, and related financial matters
• Identify opportunities to improve workflows through automation, AI tools, and technology
• Evaluate and support future ERP implementation initiatives
• Develop accounting procedures that will support continued organizational growth
• Assist with future recruitment, training, and supervision of accounting staff as the department expands
• Ensure accurate accounting for construction projects, land development activities, and property management operations

• CPA designation (or equivalent senior accounting experience) preferred
• Proven experience in a similar role, ideally within a construction-based environment is strongly preferred
• Strong multi-entity accounting experience is required
• Property management and/or real estate accounting experience is considered a strong asset
• Demonstrated success implementing accounting processes, controls, and system improvements
• Experience working in entrepreneurial, high-growth organizations
• Experience with QuickBooks and Dext is preferred
• Exposure to ERP implementations is considered an asset
• Self-motivated, resourceful, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision
