The Role: Temporary Assistant Controller / Accounting Manager (Contract, Leave Coverage)
Autobooks is looking for an experienced accounting professional to cover for our Assistant Controller during a planned leave from November 2026–April 2027, with possible extension depending on business needs. This position is hybrid, 40 hours per week, with 2–3 days in office in Downtown Detroit. You will keep the monthly close on schedule, oversee the core accounting functions, and support the finance team on ad hoc projects. Autobooks is a payment facilitator with multiple subsidiaries, so the work involves high transaction volumes, large datasets, and intercompany activity. We need someone who can start contributing within the first couple of weeks.
The Responsibilities:
Month-End Close

Manage the month-end close checklist and keep tasks on schedule
Prepare and review journal entries, including recurring, adjusting, and intercompany entries
Estimate and book accruals and prepaid amortization, and support the calculations with documentation
Prepare and review balance sheet account reconciliations
Support consolidation of multiple subsidiaries, including intercompany reconciliation and eliminations

Accounts Payable

Review AP transactions, vendor invoices, and payment runs for accuracy, coding, and approval compliance
Review the AP aging and resolve discrepancies
Oversee the vendor accrual process at month end

Accounts Receivable

Review customer and partner billing, cash application, and the AR aging
Monitor collections and flag past-due or disputed balances

Bank and Cash Reconciliations

Prepare and review bank reconciliations across multiple operating, settlement, and subsidiary accounts
Reconcile high-volume payment activity, including settlement, clearing, and funds-in-transit accounts
Investigate and resolve reconciling items promptly

Ad Hoc and Other

Support audit, tax, and compliance requests
Identify process improvements and document procedures
Other duties as assigned

The Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a senior accountant, accounting manager, or assistant controller role
Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and the full month-end close cycle
Experience with multi-entity accounting, intercompany transactions, and consolidations
Advanced Excel skills (lookups, pivot tables, working with large datasets)
Ability to work independently with little ramp-up time and meet close deadlines

Preferred

CPA or CPA candidate
NetSuite experience
Background in payments, fintech, banking, or another high-volume transaction environment
Public accounting experience
Familiarity with settlement and clearing account reconciliation
