The Senior Accountant partners with leadership to provide timely financial information, strengthen internal controls, and ensure compliance with donor restrictions, federal and state regulations, and organizational policies. This position plays a critical role in supporting the organization's mission through sound financial management and accountability.
QUALIFICATIONS Education:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance or related field required.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
- At least one (1) year of nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
- Experience with fund accounting, grant accounting, and donor-restricted funds strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting annual financial audits.
- Knowledge of Uniform Guidance and federal grant compliance is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
- Experience with nonprofit accounting software (such as Netsuite, Dynamics).
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial modeling.
- Experience preparing financial statements and management reports.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy of financial transactions.
- Ensure that all accounting records are maintained in accordance with GAAP and non-profit accounting standards.
- Responsible for all accounts payable activities, including check processing, vendor maintenance, and disbursements allocation to appropriate program and expense accounts.
- Assist the Chief Financial Officer in various capacities to commensurate with experience and knowledge of the Council's accounting system.
- Prepare and post journal entries and perform account reconciliations, including vendor statements monthly.
- Perform monthly and annual financial close activities.
- Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Analyze budget-to-actual results and explain significant variances.
- Resolve A/P inquiries as they arise.
- Provide assistance to staff regarding A/P issues.
- Assist with preparation of IRS Form 990 schedules and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate and Prepare documentation for the annual independent financial audit.
- Prepare annual Form 1099s for all independent contractors.
- Prepare schedules and special reports as needed.
- Assist program leadership with grant budgets and financial reporting requirements.
- Maintain strong internal controls and recommend process improvements.
- Assist with reconciling bank accounts and investment accounts.
- Monitor aging reports and assist with collection efforts when necessary.
- Prepare daily bank deposits for bank accounts.
- Process daily cash receipt batches into Solomon accounting system as assigned.
- Assist with training and mentoring junior finance team members.
