Senior Accountant/Analyst

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.OVERVIEWThe Senior Accountant/Analyst will directly report to the Director of Accounting and Internal Controls. The primary focus is maintaining the Cooperative’s internal and external financial report and ensuring the reports are in compliance with accounting principles (GAAP), auditing standards (GAAS), RUS and SCC regulations.ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES•Maintain an accurate and timely General Ledger Financial system so that all other financial subsystems interface properly and accurately.•Prepare accurate financial board reports in a timely manner.•Analyze general ledger accounts for variances.•Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end reconciliations on various general ledger accounts and make correcting journal entries when necessary.•Responsible for tax reports, returns, and payments (including payroll reports) are completed accurately, timely, and in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.•Develop and review policies and procedures to properly and accurately report the financial condition of the Cooperative to internal and external parties.•Ensure the Cooperative is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations (e.g., unemployment tax, payroll tax, sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, business license tax, etc.) regarding the completion and filing of returns and reports.•Prepare audit schedules, coordinate the annual financial statement audit report, tax returns, and Form7 submission.•Complete required EIA or other census data requests.•Maintain and communicate the general ledger chart of accounts and ensure it is in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and Rural Utility Service (RUS) guidelines.•Prepare and review journal entries and perform month-end and year-end closing activities.•Prepare annual consolidated entries and reports needed for affiliates.•Implement all Financial Accounting Standards that pertain to the Cooperative. These are complex accounting policies and procedures issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board and are required by generally accepted accounting procedures.•Responsible for General Ledger modules. Provide coordination and submission of enhancement requirements, testing of enhancements, upgrades, and changes, written procedures and guidelines, and user training and support of the financial systems.•Work with other department employees in analyzing the impact and accuracy of cash, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Procurement, Assets, and Payroll subledgers.•Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement processes for projects to ensure compliance in reporting and good internal controls.•Perform other duties as assigned.OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESCollaborate with the Regulatory Department to provide data for rate cases submitted to the State Corporation Commission (SCC).Participate in weekly Accounting staff meetings and periodically deliver knowledge-sharing presentations to the Accounting team.QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTSA bachelor’s degree in Accounting and seven to ten years of post-college experience in a full-service accounting department are required. Candidates must have experience applying GAAP and RUS accounting practices, as well as experience supporting independent auditor engagements. Previous accounting experience within a cooperative is preferred, particularly in electric distribution or another capital-intensive industry.The successful candidate must demonstrate a desire to learn and advance within the Cooperative. This individual must be a self-starter who can work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively across teams. The position requires strong analytical skills, meticulous attention to detail, a high degree of mathematical accuracy, and the ability to analyze, process, and reconcile complex accounting transactions. The candidate must be able to manage multiple projects, organize work effectively, meet critical deadlines, and make decisions confidently. The ability to clearly explain accounting concepts to individuals without an accounting background is also required. Candidates must have working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Rural Utilities Service (RUS) accounting, computerized accounting systems, and general office procedures. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, accounting systems, and other technology required for the position is essential.This position is based in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Occasional work outside regularly scheduled hours may be required, primarily during the annual audit or major storm events. The role may also require occasional local and out-of-state travel for conferences and training.
