JOB TITLE:             Payroll Specialist           WAGE/HOUR STATUS:        Nonexempt

REPORTS TO:          Payroll Supervisor/

                               Finance Director

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Perform prompt and accurate processing of all semi-monthly payroll and related expenses incurred by the district. Follow established procedures to process payroll and related local, state and federal reports.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED

Some college hours preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of basic payroll procedures

Computer literate - Excel

Proficiency in use of calculator and office machines.

Experience:

Two years of payroll clerical experience or equivalent

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Prepare and maintain master payroll records.
  1. Develop and process all assigned payrolls to include verification of hours, over-time, comp-time, and other payroll deductions and benefits.
  1. Review all personnel changes affecting personnel to include leave, resignations, or reassignments. Verify any final pay as result of resignation.
  1. Assist in preparation of TRS and other payroll reports as needed.
  1. Reconcile various deduction and benefit premiums and prepare payments for various payroll deductions.
  1. Reconcile general ledger with regards to benefit premium transactions each month.
  1. Maintain leave of absence records and balances for employees.
  1. Furnish information relating to the payroll to authorized persons.
  1. Maintain file of all payroll records.
  1. Stay informed of all rules and regulations related to payroll to include but not limited to TRS, IRS, FLSA, FMLA, Section 125, Pay-Day Law and other federal and state statues as they related to payroll.
  1. Keep informed of and complies with state and district policies and regulations concerning primary job functions.
  1. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Use calculator, computer, copier, and scanner

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Must be flexible to work during holidays, after hours and weekends when necessary to comply with payroll deadlines.

Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and written); strong cognitive thinking skills; ability to operate computer; ability to work in a highly confidential area; attention to detail to avoid errors and; maintain emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Repetitive hand motions; prolonged work using computer
