Position Overview
The Corporate Controller is a key leader within the Finance & Accounting (F&A) team, responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of the financial operations of the American Gas Association (AGA), the American Gas Foundation (AGF), and the American Gas Political Action Committee (GASPAC).
This role ensures the delivery of reliable financial information that supports strong stewardship of member resources and informed decision-making by senior leadership and the Board of Directors.
In addition to core accounting responsibilities, the Controller serves as a trusted partner to the CFO in strengthening financial systems, enhancing processes, and leading change across the organization. This individual brings a demonstrated track record of developing and executing multi-year (3–5 year) strategies that drive operational efficiency, modernize systems, strengthen internal controls, and foster a high-performing team environment focused on retention, professional growth, and long-term organizational value.
Role and Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Stewardship
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, procurement, contracts, fixed assets, and monthly and annual close processes.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and transparent financial reporting for senior leadership, committees, and the Board of Directors.
- Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard AGA’s financial resources and ensure data integrity.
- Lead audit activities and serve as the primary liaison to external auditors.
- Manage cash operations, banking relationships, corporate card programs and investment coordination.
- Support the development and monitoring of the annual operating and capital budgets.
Strategic Planning & Transformation Leadership
- Develop and execute 3–5 year strategic plans for the finance function that advance:
- Operational efficiency and process improvement
- Financial systems modernization and integration
- Strengthening of internal controls and risk management
- Enhanced reporting, analytics, and decision support
- Partner closely with the CFO to align financial strategy with AGA’s long-term organizational goals.
- Establish measurable outcomes and track progress across strategic initiatives, ensuring sustained impact.
- Lead transformation efforts that position the F&A function as a proactive, value-added partner to the organization.
Financial Systems Leadership
- Serve as AGA’s subject matter expert on financial systems, including ERP platforms supporting accounting, budgeting, and reporting.
- Lead the strategy, implementation, optimization, and ongoing management of financial systems.
- Develop and execute a multi-year financial systems roadmap aligned with organizational priorities.
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve data integrity, and enhance reporting capabilities.
- Ensure strong adoption of systems through training, communication, and user engagement across the organization.
Enterprise Change Management & Collaboration
- Partner with the CFO to lead finance and enterprise-wide transformation initiatives.
- Serve as a change agent, guiding both finance staff and non-financial stakeholders through evolving processes and systems.
- Collaborate across departments to strengthen financial literacy, accountability, and stewardship of AGA’s resources.
- Build strong, trusted relationships with stakeholders to align financial processes with operational needs.
Team Leadership & Culture
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing F&A team with diverse experience levels.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and service-oriented team culture aligned with AGA’s mission and values.

Governance, Compliance & External Engagement
- Serve as Staff Executive to the Audit Committee and support Board Finance Committee activities.
- Attend Board of Directors and committee meetings, preparing materials and reporting on financial results.
- Oversee tax compliance, including Forms 990, 1120-POL, and related filings.
- Manage lobbying expense reporting and regulatory requirements.
- Act as liaison with auditors, investment advisors, financial institutions, and other external partners.
Additional Responsibilities
American Gas Political Action Committee (GASPAC) – Treasurer
- Prepare and submit required FEC reports.
- Oversee contributions, deposits, disbursements, and related compliance activities.
American Gas Foundation (AGF) – Treasurer
- Support financial reporting, budgeting, and operational oversight.
- Coordinate financial activities including banking, reporting, and Board engagement.
Industry Accounting & Risk Management Programs
- Participate in future planning of industry accounting and risk management programs
- Understand members’ technical accounting issues and business complexities
- Serve as a convener and liaison with regulators, vendors, and other critical stakeholders
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive, hands-on experience in corporate accounting leadership roles with demonstrated tenure and impact.
- Proven experience in a Controller or similar role, preferably within an association environment.
- Demonstrated success in developing and executing multi-year (3–5 year) strategic plans that improve efficiency, systems, controls, and team effectiveness.
- Deep expertise in financial systems and ERP environments, including implementation and optimization.
- Experience leading organizational change initiatives across diverse stakeholder groups.
