We are exclusively representing our client, a high-end apparel company based in Venice, California, in hiring a Controller.
Responsibilities include:
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
- Prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Maintain the general ledger and oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and treasury.
- Ensure the accuracy of balance sheet reconciliations and proactively resolve accounting issues.
- Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures that support company growth.
- Oversee accounting for direct-to-consumer eCommerce, retail stores, wholesale, and third-party marketplace channels.
- Ensure accurate revenue recognition across multiple sales channels.
- Manage inventory accounting, including costing, reserves, inventory reconciliations, and periodic physical inventories.
- Partner with Operations and Supply Chain to improve inventory controls and reporting.
- Support accounting for customer returns, chargebacks, promotions, gift cards, loyalty programs, and shipping costs.
- Establish and maintain a strong internal control environment.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and company policies.
- Coordinate annual financial statement audits and serve as the primary contact for external auditors.
- Support sales tax, income tax, and other regulatory compliance activities in partnership with external advisors.
- Monitor cash flow and working capital.
- Oversee banking relationships and treasury activities.
- Improve accounting systems, workflows, and automation opportunities.
- Drive continuous process improvements that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Partner with FP&A on budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Collaborate with Merchandising, Planning, Supply Chain, Operations, and Technology teams to improve financial visibility and business performance.
- Provide financial insights to support strategic initiatives, new business opportunities, and operational decision-making.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development.
- Build scalable organizational processes to support future company growth.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA strongly preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably including both public accounting and industry experience.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing accounting teams.
- Experience within apparel, fashion, consumer products, retail, or eCommerce industries strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal controls.
- Experience with inventory accounting and multi-channel revenue recognition.
- Demonstrated success leading financial audits.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP systems (NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP, Oracle, or similar).
- Experience integrating financial systems and improving accounting processes is highly desirable.
