THE OPPORTUNITY
The Senior Manager, Investment Accounting & Reporting manages internal and external financial reporting deliverables of BCI's investment portfolios, including pooled fund and program financial statements, and guides the resolution of IFRS accounting issues related to complex financial instruments and structures within private market asset classes. The Senior Manager oversees the daily validation of net asset values under management, ensuring a strong internal control framework in the context of evolving business processes and investment products. As a subject matter expert, the Senior Manager provides technical guidance across the branch and departments, applies AI tools and automation to enhance reporting and accounting processes, and acts as a key contact for internal and external stakeholders
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
The Finance department is part of BCI Operations and is responsible for investment and corporate accounting, valuations, as well as financial statements and financial reporting to our clients. The team also leads BCI’s budgeting process, tax structuring and tax compliance, finance client engagement, finance operations, procurement, and investment performance and analytics. Working with our internal business partners, auditors and external advisors, the Finance department strives to be a trusted advisor to our internal and external clients by providing timely, accurate, and relevant financial information and analysis.
Investment Accounting & Reporting is responsible for pooled fund and program financial reporting, daily net asset value validation across asset classes, IFRS accounting matters, and financial reporting to BCI’s Audit Committee, Board, and related committees. The branch also supports private market valuations, tax filings, internal controls audit work, and external auditor engagement.
WHAT YOU BRING
University degree in a related field
Professional accounting designation (CPA) or equivalent
8+ years of relevant accounting and financial reporting experience, with progressive responsibility in team management including resource and performance management
In-depth knowledge of IFRS, specifically IFRS 9, Financial Instruments and IFRS 13, Fair Value Measurement
Direct investment accounting experience in an investment manager environment, including accounting and reporting for complex multi-owner unitized investment structures across direct investments and indirect funds
Strong technical understanding of net asset valuation methodology
Experience interacting with senior management, external advisors, auditors, and those charged with governance in a financial reporting context
Demonstrated experience with process automation and continuous improvement within a financial reporting or accounting context
Strong understanding of change management principles and their application to complex process and system transitions
Preferred
Previous audit or direct financial reporting experience in an investment manager environment
Completion of or working toward CFA, CAIA, or the Canadian Securities Course
Experience with Workiva, SimCorp Dimension, or Power BI
Familiarity with enterprise AI tools and their application to financial reporting or accounting workflows
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Financial Reporting
Guides and resolves IFRS accounting issues related to complex financial instruments and structures within private market asset classes
Researches new and evolving accounting standards, recommends policy changes and revised disclosures, and ensures audited financial statements comply with IFRS
Evaluates the financial reporting impact of new investment structures and complex instruments, and corporate initiatives, providing recommendations and financial information
Facilitates external auditor engagements, including responding to auditor queries, providing applicable supporting audit evidence, and coordinating audit readiness across functions
Stewards the adoption and continuous improvement of financial reporting systems and tools, including Workiva and AI-enabled automation, maintaining process documentation in support of internal controls over financial reporting
Investment Accounting
Leads day-to-day team operations, overseeing the reconciliation and validation of investment valuations across entities
Leads complex, technical investment accounting projects, providing technical guidance on financial processes and investment accounting matters across the branch and to cross-functional partners
Develops or refines flow of funds Excel models for program openings and/or intricate restructurings
Ensures branch adherence to internal controls and policies, evaluating the control framework in the context of evolving business processes and investment products
Leadership and Operations
Proactively plans with the Director to manage workload and competing priorities within agreed-upon timelines
Leads all aspects of team management including performance development, coaching, recruitment, and onboarding
Collaborates with business units across BCI and represents the Finance department on corporate initiatives
Continuously improves financial reporting processes and solutions, translating complex financial information into value-added business intelligence
Identifies and addresses risks, ensuring reporting and processes adhere to the audit and internal control framework
Champions AI adoption within the team, applying BCI's AI-First principles to identify opportunities to augment or automate investment accounting and reporting workflows
WHERE YOU WILL WORK
This role will be based in our headquarters in downtown Victoria, BC.
SALARY RANGE
The annualized salary range for this Victoria based role is CAD $135,000-$160,000.
BCI offers a competitive total rewards package, including a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, and paid time off. We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we operate and with consideration for internal equity and job structure. The base salary will consider factors such as the individual's skill set, experience, and internal equity. We aim for actual pay to be around the market median for expected performance and the upper quartile for excellent performance. Actual salaries may vary based on experience and expertise.
