Role: RSM is seeking an experienced Tax Partner to help lead and grow our Private Company tax practice. The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to privately held, middle-market businesses and their owners, providing practical guidance across business taxation, ownership transition, succession planning, wealth transfer, and related compliance matters. The role may also include serving ultra-high-net-worth individuals and family offices whose needs are connected to privately held businesses and their owners. This partner will lead complex client relationships, develop new business, collaborate across capabilities, and build high-performing teams. Working closely with professionals across estate and gift planning, state and local tax, international tax, and other advisory areas, the partner will deliver integrated solutions aligned with each client’s business, family, and financial objectives. As a Tax Partner in the Private Company practice, you will be accountable for client leadership, technical quality, responsible growth, engagement economics, talent development, and market leadership. You will advise business owners on complex tax matters, anticipate emerging needs, and connect clients with the full capabilities of the firm. You will also contribute to the long-term growth of the practice by developing talent, expanding strategic relationships, strengthening market presence, and advancing consistent, technology-enabled ways of working. Job Responsibilities: Client and Technical Leadership Serve as the senior relationship leader and trusted tax advisor for privately held businesses, owners, and their families. Advise clients on business taxation, entity structuring, ownership transitions, succession planning, wealth transfer, and tax compliance. Lead complex tax engagements involving partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, individuals, trusts, and estates. Identify significant technical, quality, risk, and client-service matters early and engage appropriate specialists. Collaborate across estate and gift planning, state and local tax, international tax, and other capabilities to deliver integrated solutions. Growth and Market Leadership Develop and execute relationships and market strategies that support responsible, profitable growth. Build a qualified pipeline through existing client relationships, centers of influence, referral networks, and market-facing activities. Expand strategic client relationships by identifying needs and connecting clients with relevant firm capabilities. Represent the firm in the marketplace and contribute to the growth of targeted industries, capabilities, and geographic markets. Engagement and Operational Leadership Maintain accountability for engagement quality, staffing, profitability, billing, collections, and overall client experience. Monitor client portfolios and engagement performance, addressing resource, scope, timing, quality, and economic issues promptly. Champion standardized processes, digital tools, data-driven insights, and global delivery capabilities to improve quality, scalability, team experience, and client outcomes. Apply sound professional judgment and consistently uphold the firm’s quality, independence, ethics, and risk management expectations. Talent and Enterprise Leadership Coach, sponsor, and develop professionals at all levels, building technical depth and the next generation of leaders. Foster an inclusive, accountable, collaborative, and high-performing team environment. Support succession planning, workforce development, capacity management, and effective deployment of domestic and global talent. Lead with an enterprise mindset, balancing client needs, team development, practice priorities, and long-term firm value. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field from an accredited university. Active CPA license or equivalent professional credential in the state of residence or primary office. Minimum of 12 years of tax experience in public accounting, including demonstrated ability to identify, sell, and deliver tax services to middle-market clients. Demonstrated ability to leverage technology, data, and digital collaboration tools to lead client engagements, manage practice performance, and drive operational effectiveness. Demonstrated commitment to professional ethics, independence, quality, and sound judgment. Demonstrated executive presence and ability to communicate clearly and credibly with business owners, C-suite executives, family members, professional advisors, and firm leaders. Ability to lead multiple complex client relationships and priorities while maintaining quality, meeting deadlines, and resolving sensitive client-service or risk matters. Ability to lead through influence across capabilities, markets, and organizational boundaries. Preferred Qualifications: Experience working for a Big Four or large national accounting firm. LL.M. in taxation and/or a master’s degree in taxation. Proven experience serving privately held, middle-market businesses, with deep technical expertise in S corporation taxation and advising closely held companies, business owners, and their families on complex tax matters. Demonstrated success developing business through client relationships, market presence, centers of influence, referral networks, and business development activities, with the ability to drive responsible growth in targeted markets. Work Environment and Travel Ability to work effectively in a professional office environment and, as required by the role, at client sites, including use of a computer and other standard office equipment. Ability to maintain a consistent onsite presence in accordance with firm expectations and travel to client sites as required. Ability to work extended and/or nonstandard hours during peak periods or as necessary to meet client, project, or firm busines s needs.
