Corporate Controller � Canada

Position Summary

The Canadian Corporate Controller is the senior accounting leader responsible for the integrity and accuracy of Canadian financial reporting, delivery of a four-business-day close, and timely completion of the year-end external audit.

Reporting to the VP Finance - Canada, this role owns the end-to-end controllership framework across Total Power Limited, including final review and sign-off of the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close; consolidated reporting through Microsoft Dynamics 365 and OneStream; external audit execution; accounting policies and process documentation; and the control environment.

The role also provides corporate accounting oversight and controllership support to divisional leaders, helping ensure transactions are recorded accurately and on time.

What You'll Own - The Role

Enterprise Close, Consolidation and Sign-Off

• Own the Canadian monthly close and deliver accurate, reviewed results within four business days.
• Collaborate with the Global Corporate Controller to establish the close calendar, review standards, dependencies, and escalation protocols with the Accounting Manager and Divisional Controller.
• Review and approve journal entries, accruals, estimates, balance sheet reconciliations, intercompany balances, eliminations, foreign exchange revaluations, and other close deliverables.
• Challenge unusual movements, unsupported balances, aged reconciling items, cutoff issues, and accounting judgements before sign-off.
• Ensure final results remain closely aligned with the Weekly Pulse and Monthly Flash results.

Financial Reporting, D365 and OneStream

• Own the integrity and timely delivery of monthly financial statements and management reporting for the Canadian group, including income statement, balance sheet, cash flow, and supporting schedules.
• Oversee the end-to-end reporting flow from Microsoft Dynamics 365 into OneStream, including chart of accounts and entity mappings, data load validations, intercompany matching/eliminations, and reporting package completion.
• Ensure D365 subledgers, the general ledger, OneStream, and management reporting reconcile and that differences are investigated, documented, and resolved promptly.
• Review numbers for consistency, ASPE compliance, and applicable parent-company or lender requirements; partner with FP&A so actual results are available on time for performance and forecast reporting.

Audit, Accounting Governance and Process Documentation

• Own the external audit process for the Group, ensuring all deliverables are complete, accurate, internally consistent, appropriately approved, and provided in accordance with the audit timetable to support the issuance of the audited financial statements within 45 calendar days of year-end.
• Manage all request lists, internal owners, due dates, quality review, issue resolution, and communication with external auditors.
• Prepare or review technical accounting memoranda for significant or judgmental matters, including revenue recognition, estimates, provisions, leases, fixed assets, business combinations, and other non-routine transactions.
• Maintain current process narratives, accounting policies, close procedures, control documentation, and responsibility matrices for significant financial processes.
• Maintain year-round audit readiness through supportable reconciliations, schedules, evidence of review, and compliance with ASPE, company policies, and approval authorities.

Variance Analysis and Performance Review

• Lead the accounting review of monthly results against budget, forecast, and prior periods and ensure significant variances are understood, supported, and clearly explained.
• Translate financial variances into operational drivers, separating timing, volume, price, mix, productivity, utilization, cost, accounting estimate, and one-time impacts where relevant.
• Prepare concise, decision-useful commentary for the VP Finance - Canada and divisional leaders, with clear risks, opportunities, owners, and actions.
• Partner with FP&A on forecast inputs and performance bridges and maintain Equipment, Service and Rental reporting that connects financial results to key operational metrics.

Divisional Controllership Support

• In collaboration with the VP Finance, divisional controllers, and business leaders, provide corporate accounting oversight and support across the Service, Rentals and Equipment divisions.
• Partner with leaders during monthly operating reviews to explain results, challenge assumptions, identify performance drivers, and align on proactive corrective actions.
• Review and challenge the accounting for service work-in-progress, revenue and expense cutoff, accrued and deferred revenue, warranty and other operational accruals, inventory usage, and cost allocations.
• Review rental fleet accounting, including additions, transfers, disposals, depreciation, capitalization judgements, asset verification, and reconciliation of the fixed asset register.
• Review gross margin, labour recovery/utilization, rental fleet utilization, maintenance spend, unbilled work, and aged WIP; identify risks early and drive action with business owners.
• Support the other business units in Ottawa and Quebec by providing accounting guidance, consistent reporting, issue resolution, and controllership support.

Controls, Risk and Continuous Improvement

• Own and strengthen internal controls over financial reporting, including clear preparer-reviewer accountability, appropriate segregation of duties, evidence standards, and timely remediation of deficiencies.
• Monitor balance sheet quality and ensure reconciliations are current, substantiated, reviewed, and free of unresolved or unsupported items.
• Standardize accounting practices across entities, branches, and divisions and remediate recurring adjustments or control gaps.
• Partner with IT and process owners to improve D365 and OneStream data quality, controls, automation, and reporting reliability while reducing offline spreadsheet reliance.

Team Leadership and Cross-Functional Partnership

• Lead, coach, and develop assigned accounting team members; set clear expectations for ownership, quality, responsiveness, documentation, and deadlines.
• Define the operating rhythm between cross-functional teams and divisional leaders so responsibilities, handoffs, and escalation points are clear.
• Build sustainable backup coverage for critical processes and a culture of constructive challenge, early escalation, and accountability for outcomes.
• Build trusted cross-functional relationships while maintaining appropriate financial independence and control discipline.

Measures of Success

• The Canadian books are closed and signed off accurately within four business days, with no late or unsupported material items.
• All management audit deliverables are completed by agreed deadlines and the audited financial statements are issued within 45 calendar days of the December 31 year-end close.
• Final month-end close results remain closely aligned with the Weekly Pulse and Monthly Flash results provided to the VP Finance - Canada, with material variances identified and explained promptly.
• D365, OneStream, subledgers, and management reporting are reconciled and delivered on time.
• Balance sheet reconciliations, accounting memoranda, policies, and process documentation remain current and audit-ready throughout the year.
• Business unit leaders feel supported and this role is viewed as a trusted business partner/advisor.

What You Need

• Canadian CPA designation and a university degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Eight or more years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful experience as a Controller, Senior Accounting Manager, or equivalent leader with final close and reporting accountability.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a four-business day month-end close and execute the issuance of audited financial statements within 45 calendar days of year-end, while managing competing priorities, challenging constructively, and holding teams accountable.
• Private-equity-backed experience and bilingual English/French capability are assets.
• Strong technical knowledge of ASPE and demonstrated judgement in complex or non-routine accounting matters.
• Proven experience leading a multi-entity month-end close, consolidated financial reporting, balance sheet review, external audits, and internal controls.
• Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and OneStream is strongly preferred; experience managing system-to-consolidation data flows and reporting controls is particularly valuable.
• Experience in a multi-currency, multi-branch service, rental, equipment, industrial, construction, or project-based environment is strongly preferred.
• Strong understanding of service WIP, revenue cutoff, fixed asset and rental fleet accounting, inventory, accruals, intercompany accounting, and operational profitability analysis.
• Advanced Excel and data analysis skills, with the ability to work confidently with large/complex data sets.
• Experience using approved automation, data, and AI tools to improve close, reporting, analysis and documentation is an asset.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to convert complex accounting and performance issues into clear recommendations for non-finance leaders.
