Position Summary
Mental Health Partnerships is seeking an experienced Controller to join its financial leadership team and help support the financial strength of a mission-driven nonprofit organization. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will lead day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, grant and contract accounting, audit readiness, internal controls, and the development of the accounting team.
This is an opportunity for an experienced nonprofit finance professional to combine strong technical accounting expertise with leadership and collaboration. The Controller will work closely with the CFO, organizational leadership, and program teams as part of the senior leadership team to provide accurate and timely financial information, support sound decision-making, and ensure MHP maintains strong financial practices and stewardship of its resources.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Reporting
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and review of financial results.
- Prepare and review timely and accurate GAAP-based financial statements, supporting schedules, and variance analysis.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and ensure revenues and expenses are recorded accurately and in the appropriate period.
- Review balance sheet reconciliations and ensure timely resolution of outstanding items.
- Support cash management and forecasting by monitoring cash position, receipts, disbursements, and projected needs.
Budgeting, Grants & Contracts
- Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and reforecasting in collaboration with the CFO and organizational leadership.
- Develop and monitor grant and program budgets and provide budget-to-actual reporting.
- Oversee and support grant billing, reimbursement requests, invoicing, and drawdowns.
- Maintain accurate tracking of restricted funds, grant balances, cost allocations, and shared expenses.
- Provide financial modeling and accounting guidance for new programs, contracts, and organizational initiatives.
- Serve as a key financial resource for funders, including financial reporting, audits, monitoring requests, and supporting documentation.
Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and workflows.
- Coordinate annual financial statement audits, regulatory reviews, and monitoring visits.
- Support Single Audit preparation, including schedules, work papers, and SEFA support when applicable.
- Coordinate financial information for Form 990, BCO-10, and other required filings in partnership with external advisors.
- Support compliance with federal and state grant and contract requirements, including Uniform Guidance and 2 CFR 200, as applicable.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
- Lead, supervise, and develop accounting staff and ensure consistent, accurate, and timely financial processes.
- Partner with department leaders to review financial results, identify trends and risks, and support informed decision-making.
- Communicate financial information and compliance requirements clearly to financial and non-financial audiences.
- Participate in cross-functional planning and organizational initiatives.
Compensation & Benefits

Work Location & Schedule
This is a hybrid position based at 833 Chestnut Street, Suite 1100, Philadelphia, PA 19107, with three days each week in the office, Friday mandatory. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, with scheduling options of 8:00 AM–4:00 PM, 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, or 9:00 AM–5:00 PM.

RequirementsQualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
- At least five years of progressive accounting experience, with significant nonprofit fund accounting and grant/contract accounting experience strongly preferred.
- At least three years of management or supervisory experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial statement preparation, internal controls, and financial reporting.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, grant compliance, and financial analysis.
- Experience supporting annual audits and Single Audits, including federal and state grant requirements, preferred.
- CPA or CPA-eligible status preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly and collaborate effectively across an organization.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and confidentiality.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:
- Sit at a desk with ergonomically appropriate equipment for most of the work day.
- Lift up to 15 lbs.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance and be available for flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends and/or work holidays/overtime as needed.
- Must be able to travel within the community that may not be handicap accessible: walking and/or drive agency vehicles, depending on the needs of the program. Ability to use public transportation, move around inner-city neighborhoods daily, including in inclement weather, carry computer equipment, and ascend/descend stairs carrying computer equipment. Must be able to travel to all sites supported, and MHP’s main offices as needed.
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with ADA, FMLA and other federal state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
- Frequent talking and listening. Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly and accurately; possible exposure to loud and/or vulgar language and hostile gestures, given participant mental health diagnoses and challenges.
- Remain awake during entire shift, including break times.
