Position Summary
Under administrative direction, this position oversees and administers complex financial and accounting operations in support of university programs and departments. Responsibilities include financial planning, budgeting, reporting, compliance monitoring, and process improvement, while exercising significant independent judgment and strategic decision-making. The position may provide leadership and oversight of staff and financial functions that impact multiple units across the organization. Extensive knowledge of accounting principles, financial management practices, and applicable policies and regulations is required.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform complex account reconciliations for a variety of university funds and accounts, including reviewing transactions, identifying discrepancies, researching variances, and preparing correcting entries to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
- Serves as a subject matter expert on complex financial and accounting matters.
- Analyzes financial information, evaluates alternatives, and provides recommendations to leadership to support informed decision-making, compliance, and effective resource management.
- Supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of financial systems, policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Ensures compliance with applicable regulations, university policies, and reporting requirements while adapting financial processes to meet evolving organizational needs.
- Oversee or assist with the design, enhancement, and maintenance of specialized financial systems that support institutional operations and strategic objectives.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Any one or any combination of the following, totaling three (3) years (36 months), from the categories below:
- Work experience and/or training in Accounting or a closely related field
- College course work and/or training in Accounting or a closely related field including 12 semester hours in accounting
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
- A total of two (2) years (24 months) of experience in professional level accounting work consistent with the next lower level of this series.
Note: An advanced degree in accountancy or registration as a Certified Public Accountant may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications- Master’s degree in Accountancy, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience working in higher education, governmental, or other complex institutional environments.
- Experience reconciling multiple fund types, including state, grant, gift, and self-supporting funds
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, formulas, and data analysis tools.
- Knowledge of State of Illinois and university accounting policies and procedures.
- Strong customer service skills and ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Ability to interpret financial data and provide recommendations to leadership.
- Ability to identify opportunities for process improvements and implement effective solutions.
