Job Title:
Tax Manager / Senior Tax Consultant
Type of Position:
The role is a 3 to 6 month contract to start, tied to a specific project. There’s no guaranteed conversion at this stage, but there is absolutely potential for it to lead to something longer term depending on business needs and mutual fit.
Candidate Requirements:
This position is only open to US Citizens and Permanent Residents (Green Card holders). Candidates requiring visa sponsorship or holding work authorizations such as H-1B, F-1, or TN visas are not eligible for any positions with this company.
Job Location:
Wixom, MI (we are seeking for this role to be onsite or hybrid).
Compensation:
$70.00/hr to $80.00/hr (depending on experience).
Benefits:
- Available (health insurance, dental, vision, 401k, etc) – benefit eligibility begins the 1st of the month after 30 days of employment.
- This role will have 10 days PTO (PTO accrues over time). If converting to direct hire, there will be significantly more PTO.
Job Description:
HRU Technical Resources has partnered with a leading supplier of industrial robots and robotic automation systems headquartered in Wixom, MI. Our company supports a wide range of automation applications across multiple industries. We are a part of a global organization with more than 50 years of robotics experience. We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager or Senior Tax Consultant to provide hands-on leadership and expertise across corporate tax functions during a critical project period. This assignment requires a seasoned tax professional with a proven track record of owning and leading tax operations for a manufacturing or corporate organization.
The ideal candidate will have deep experience managing indirect tax compliance, property tax reporting, and tax technology systems. This is not a general accounting role; candidates must possess extensive tax-specific expertise and have served as the primary tax leader or subject matter expert within prior organizations.
Key Responsibilities:
Sales & Use Tax
- Manage and oversee multi-state sales and use tax calculations, filings, and compliance activities.
- Prepare, review, and file sales and use tax returns accurately and on time.
- Research taxability issues and provide recommendations regarding state and local tax requirements.
- Identify and resolve discrepancies, exemptions, and compliance risks.
Property Tax
- Prepare and review personal property tax calculations and filings.
- Ensure compliance with state and local property tax regulations.
- Coordinate supporting documentation and respond to taxing authority inquiries as needed.
Avalara Optimization & Data Cleansing
- Lead data cleansing initiatives within Avalara to improve accuracy and compliance.
- Review and update tax codes, exemption certificates, customer classifications, and reporting structures.
- Identify process improvements and recommend best practices for ongoing tax management.
- Collaborate with accounting, finance, and IT teams to ensure system integrity and efficient tax reporting.
Process Improvement & Advisory
- Assess current tax processes and controls.
- Recommend and implement improvements to increase efficiency and reduce compliance risk.
- Serve as the organization's tax subject matter expert throughout the engagement.
- Provide documentation and knowledge transfer recommendations to support long-term success.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field.
- Minimum 5+ years of progressive tax experience with a strong focus on indirect tax compliance.
- Previous experience leading or managing the tax function for an organization.
- Demonstrated expertise in: Sales & Use Tax, Property Tax, Multi-state tax compliance, Tax research and reporting
- Hands-on experience with relevant tax software including implementation, administration, optimization, or data cleansing activities.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing industry tax considerations preferred.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and quickly assess existing processes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA, MST, or other advanced tax credentials preferred.
- Experience utilizing Avalara (our tax software) is highly preferred.
- Experience supporting multinational or complex manufacturing organizations.
- Prior consulting or interim leadership experience is highly desirable.
Work Environment / Other Info:
- 1st (day) shift role (Monday to Friday). This will be a hybrid or on site role (depending on employee preference) to be based in Wixom, MI.
- While overtime isn’t typically expected in this role, it may occur from time to time. Any OT will be paid at 1.5x.
