Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage the company’s indirect tax function, including sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, personal property tax, VAT/GST, excise tax, and other transaction-based filings.
- Oversee the timely preparation, review, filing, and payment of indirect tax returns across applicable jurisdictions.
- Manage indirect tax audits, notices, voluntary disclosures, exemption certificate reviews, and related tax authority requests.
- Research and document indirect tax issues, including nexus, taxability, exemptions, sourcing, resale treatment, and marketplace rules.
- Partner with business units, accounting, legal, IT, and external advisors on indirect tax matters related to operations, contracts, acquisitions, and system or process changes.
- Maintain and improve indirect tax processes, controls, calendars, reconciliations, work papers, tax matrices, exemption certificate procedures, and audit-ready documentation.
- Oversee tax technology, ERP tax configuration, rate files, taxability matrices, and automation initiatives supporting tax calculation, reporting, and compliance.
- Review indirect tax general ledger accounts, journal entries, payment requests, and related monthly and quarterly close activities.
- Monitor indirect tax developments and communicate relevant impacts to tax leadership and business stakeholders.
- Identify and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, control enhancements, and data-quality improvements.
- Manage internal teams and external service providers to ensure compliance with applicable indirect tax laws and filing requirements.
- Participate in special projects, tax planning, due diligence, integrations, and other ad hoc tax department projects.
- Perform other duties, assignments and special projects as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Bachelors or better in Accounting, Finance, Taxation or related field required
- CPA, CMI, IPT, master’s in taxation, or other relevant certification preferred
- 5+ years of progressive indirect tax experience in corporate tax, public accounting, or a similar environment
- Prior supervisory or team leadership experience preferred
- Experience managing indirect tax compliance, audits, notices, registrations, and tax authority correspondence
- Experience with tax technology, tax engines, ERP systems, tax research tools, and data/automation tools; Vertex, Avalara, Alteryx, or Power BI experience is a plus
- Strong knowledge of sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, property tax, VAT/GST, excise tax, nexus, exemptions, and taxability rules
- Strong Excel and data analysis skills, including reconciliations, large data sets, and tax risk identification
- Strong project management, organizational communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Strong attention to detail and ability to prepare and review accurate, well-supported documentation
Target salary range: $100,000-$125,000
