Job Overview
The Tax Director is a leadership role responsible for contributing to the strategic growth, profitability, and technical excellence of the Firm’s Tax Practice. This position manages and grows a defined portfolio of client relationships, supports business development initiatives, and plays a key role in expanding services with both new and existing clients.
As a trusted advisor to business owners, executives, and high-net-worth individuals, the Tax Director provides forward-looking tax strategy, risk management guidance, and advisory insight while identifying opportunities to broaden the firm’s tax service offerings. This includes expanding tax planning services and collaborating with other service lines to deliver integrated solutions across accounting, advisory, and assurance.
In addition to growth responsibilities, the Tax Director provides advanced technical oversight and strategic review of complex engagements, partnering with firm leadership on final approvals where required. The role also includes mentoring managers and senior managers, maintaining high standards of quality and compliance, and representing the firm externally to strengthen client relationships and support continued market growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic oversight and final technical review of complex federal, state, and local tax engagements as signing partner and ultimate technical authority.
- Lead high-level tax strategy discussions for individual (1040), corporate (1120/1120S), partnership (1065), trust, estate, and exempt organization clients, while guiding Senior Managers and engagement teams in preparation and review.
- Build and maintain long-term client relationships, transitioning engagements from compliance-focused services to high-value advisory partnerships that anticipate needs and identify planning opportunities.
- Lead complex, multi-entity tax planning strategies, including entity structuring, income allocation, succession planning, and estate/trust administration, ensuring alignment with client objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor and apply changes in tax laws, regulations, and court rulings, providing proactive guidance on planning opportunities, risk mitigation, and strategic alternatives.
- Support the Tax practice growth strategy by originating new business, managing a defined book of revenue, expanding existing relationships, and converting compliance work into long-term advisory engagements.
- Increase revenue through expanded tax services, cross-practice collaboration, and development of strong referral networks and centers of influence; actively participate in networking and industry events to sustain pipeline growth.
- Track business development metrics and contribute to annual revenue growth and profitability objectives.
- Collaborate with firm leadership on engagement pricing, structuring, and strategic initiatives to enhance profitability, operational efficiency, and client satisfaction.
- Establish and enforce strong documentation standards, structured review processes, and defensible technical positions to mitigate regulatory and operational risk.
- Mentor and develop Senior Managers, Managers, and staff in technical expertise, leadership, client management, and business development; lead firm-wide training initiatives to elevate practice capability and ensure consistent service excellence.
- Represent the firm externally through conferences, professional associations, speaking engagements, and thought leadership to enhance visibility, credibility, and business development opportunities.
- Advocate for the firm’s full range of services by identifying cross-service opportunities and integrating solutions across accounting, audit, and tax to drive long-term client growth.
