Horizon Retail Construction is a nationally recognized general contractor specializing in tenant improvement. We are currently seeking a detail-oriented and driven Tax & Compliance Manager to join the team at our corporate headquarters in Sturtevant, Wisconsin. Key Responsibilities:
State & Local Tax
- Prepare and file sales and use tax returns for all required jurisdictions.
- Own multistate sales and use tax compliance across 50+ states and local jurisdictions.
- Research and interpret state and local tax regulations.
- Respond to tax notices and inquiries.
- Manage state and local tax audits.
- Maintain tax filing calendar and compliance deadlines.
- Review exemption certificates and vendor tax documentation.
- Manage vendor W-9 validation and 1099 processes.
- Coordinate income and franchise tax payments with external CPA firms.
- Monitor tax law changes and assess potential business impacts.
- Mentor, develop, and coach operating teams on tax impact on projects.
- Develop and maintain procedures supporting accurate tax treatment.
Accounting & Month-End Close
- Participate in monthly, quarterly and annual close processes.
- Research and resolve reconciling items and unusual account activity.
- Assist with accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets and other general ledger activity.
- Prepare supporting schedules for financial statements and management reporting.
- Assist the Controller with monthly financial reporting.
- Support year-end accounting and external audit requests.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls.
- Assume increasing responsibility for accounting functions as knowledge of the business develops.
Compliance & Other Finance
- Oversee licensing compliance process managed by Licensing Specialist.
- Review license renewal status and escalation items.
- Coordinate with bonding companies regarding compliance requirements.
- Develop and improve compliance tracking procedures.
- Assist with credit risk management.
- Support other accounting, tax and compliance projects as needed.
Summary of Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting and/or tax experience preferred.
- 3+ years of working knowledge of sales and use tax/SALT; multistate experience strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of multistate taxation principles.
- Ability to independently research tax issues and determine where to obtain reliable answers.
- Experience filing returns in numerous jurisdictions.
- Strong Excel and accounting/ERP system experience.
- Strong audit and tax research experience.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in public accounting or corporate tax department.
- Knowledge of sales & use tax and indirect tax compliance.
- Construction, general contracting or project-based accounting experience.
- Multistate sales and use tax experience.
- Avalara or similar tax technology experience.
- Accounting process improvement/internal controls experience.
