Site Financial Controller

Location: Newfoundland and Labrador

Employment Type: Full Time – Hybrid position on site requirements to be defined

Reports to CFO

2          Position Summary

The Site Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial management, accounting, reporting, budgeting, and internal controls of the company’s project. This role serves as the primary finance business partner to the Project leadership team and ensures accurate and timely financial information is available to support operational and strategic decision-making.

The Site Financial Controller will manage the day-to-day finance and accounting activities at the site while working closely with the CFO to ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, internal controls, and reporting requirements.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on finance leader who can balance detailed accounting responsibilities with commercial and operational support.

3          Key Responsibilities

3.1              Financial Reporting & Accounting

·       Oversee the day-to-day accounting activities for the site, including accounts payable, general ledger, cash management, and reconciliations.

·       Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.

·       Ensure financial transactions are accurately recorded in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies.

·       Review balance sheet accounts and ensure appropriate reconciliations and supporting documentation are maintained.

·       Monitor accruals, provisions, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and other significant accounts.

·       Support external audits and provide requested documentation and analysis.

3.2             Budgeting

·       Support the annual budgeting process for the Project

·       Monitor actual results against budget.

·       Identify financial risks, trends, and opportunities and communicate them to management.

·       Develop financial models and analysis to support operational and strategic decisions.

3.3             Operations & Business Partnering

·       Act as the primary finance business partner to the Site Management team  

·       Monitor operating costs, productivity, and key performance indicators.

·       Partner with the Project to identify cost savings and efficiency opportunities.

·       Ensure appropriate financial controls are in place over purchasing, inventory, payroll, expenses, and other site activities.

3.4             Cost & Project Accounting

·       Monitor and analyze project/site costs and commitments.

·       Review purchase orders, contracts, change orders, and other significant expenditures.

·       Identify potential cost overruns and financial risks and communicate them to management.

·       Support site teams with financial reporting and analysis.

3.5             Cash Flow & Working Capital

·       Monitor site cash flow and working capital requirements.

·       Oversee accounts payable activities.

·       Review vendor payment requirements and cash commitments.

3.6             Internal Controls & Compliance

·       Maintain and strengthen financial controls at the site.

·       Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.

·       Ensure appropriate segregation of duties within site finance and accounting activities where applicable

·       Monitor compliance with purchasing, expense, approval, and payment policies.

·       Identify control deficiencies and recommend corrective actions.

·       Support compliance with applicable tax, regulatory, and statutory requirements.

·       Maintain appropriate documentation and audit trails for financial transactions.

3.7             Team Leadership

·       Manage, mentor, and develop a team of two site accounting and finance personnel.

·       Establish clear responsibilities, objectives, and performance expectations.

·       Review their work and ensure deadlines and quality standards are met.

3.8             Systems & Process Improvement

·       Identify opportunities to improve accounting and financial processes.

·       Implement standardized processes, controls, and reporting procedures.

·       Support optimization of ERP and financial systems.

·       Automate manual processes where practical.

·       Ensure data integrity and consistency between site and corporate systems.

4          Qualifications

4.1             Education:

·       Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline.

·       CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting designation is preferred

4.2             Experience:

·       5–10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.

·       Experience in a site, plant, project, manufacturing, construction, engineering, or operational environment is preferred.

·       Strong knowledge of financial accounting and reporting.

·       Experience with budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial modelling.

·       Experience managing or supervising accounting/finance personnel.

·       Strong understanding of internal controls and financial processes.

·       Experience working with ERP systems and financial reporting tools.
