Senior Accountant

Position Summary
Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Senior Accountant is responsible for a broad range of accounting and financial reporting activities, including general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, tax compliance, and financial analysis.
This position prepares monthly and ad hoc reports for management and Club committees, maintains prepaid expenses, accruals, deferred revenue, fixed assets, and inventory reconciliations, and assists with annual audit preparation. The Senior Accountant also researches accounting transactions, prepares tax-related filings, and supports various financial and operational initiatives across the Club.
This role offers the opportunity to work closely with senior leadership and gain exposure to budgeting, forecasting, audit coordination, tax compliance, and strategic financial planning within one of the nation's premier private clubs.
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and high-performing work environment within the Finance Department.
- Oversee cash and check deposit functions.
- Manage and reconcile petty cash funds.
- Reconcile monthly bank activity.
- Conduct and review periodic physical inventory counts and reconciliations.
- Maintain the fixed assets database and related accounts, including acquisitions, disposals, and departmental transfers.
- Maintain and reconcile special activities accounts with the general ledger, including Ladies 9-Hole and 18-Hole Groups, Senior Golf, Tennis functions, and other Club activities.
- Respond to member account inquiries and perform related account reconciliations.
- Maintain adequate postage inventory and provide monthly usage reporting to the CFO.
- Coordinate with the Club’s insurance agents regarding property damage and accident claims.
- Assist the CFO in developing annual operating and capital budgets, preparing financial forecasts, analyzing budget-to-actual results, and identifying key variances and trends.
- Assist with year-end account reconciliations and closing activities.
- Prepare reports required by banks, insurance companies, governmental agencies, and professional organizations, ensuring compliance with Club policies.
- Compile and prepare information used in the filing of applicable federal, state, and local tax returns.
- Serve as a liaison with the Club’s external auditors and assist with annual audit preparation.
- Assist with financial reporting and presentation materials for the Annual Board of Governors’ Orientation Meeting.
- Maintain accurate spreadsheets and supporting documentation used for Club surveys and benchmarking initiatives.
- Partner with the CFO to plan, monitor, and manage capital projects and budgets.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding Club, member, and employee information.
- Compile, maintain, and verify the accuracy of special functions activity, including supporting tax-exemption documentation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
- Minimum of five years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
- Experience in a private club, hospitality, nonprofit, or similarly complex service-based organization preferred.
- Experience with operational and financial audits.
- Strong understanding of general accounting principles, financial reporting, and reconciliations.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with all levels of the organization.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, and accounting software systems. Experience with Jonas, Club Essentials, or other club management software is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational, documentation, and problem-solving abilities.
- Highly detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Self-motivated professional with a proactive approach and strong sense of ownership.
