Interim Manager, FP&A (18-Month Contract)
Employment Type: Contract (18 months)
Location: Toronto, ON (Mostly Remote — on-site for quarterly meetings and periodic team rotations)
Rate: $65–70/hr
Industry: Not-for-Profit — Social Services
Position Type: Backfill
About the Opportunity
Our client is a long-established Toronto not-for-profit in the social services sector, with roughly 500 employees and a funding model that is primarily Ministry-based, supplemented by grants, donations, and fee-for-service revenue. The organization has served its community for over 60 years and is in a period of active change, including a Vena implementation and a newly appointed VP of Finance.
This role covers an 18-month maternity leave for the Manager, FP&A, starting in August with a transition period alongside the incumbent. Reporting to the Director of FP&A, you'll lead a team of three analysts and own the full planning cycle: monthly analytics and variance commentary, continuous reforecasting, quarterly board reporting, and the September interim results submission to the Ministry. Budget season kicks off in October/November, and a key early deliverable is building a new budget template from scratch and walking department leads through budgets and allocations.
This is a hands-on mandate for someone who thrives in unstructured environments. Reporting today runs through Excel and Power Query while Vena is being implemented, ad hoc reporting demands are elevated due to current operational circumstances, and the team includes early-career analysts who will benefit from real coaching. If you know your way around government funding and can bring structure without waiting for it to be handed to you, this role has genuine scope.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the FP&A team of three (two Senior Financial Analysts and one Financial Analyst), providing coaching, review, and day-to-day direction
- Own monthly analytics, budget-to-actual analysis, and variance commentary, identifying drivers and changes in departmental plans
- Manage continuous reforecasting cycles and compare forecasts against actuals
- Prepare the quarterly board reporting deck
- Deliver the September interim results submission to the Ministry
- Build a new budget template from scratch and lead the October/November budget season end-to-end
- Business partner with department leads across the organization, walking non-finance teams through budgets and allocations
- Work with the VP and Director to identify gaps and opportunities in funding statements, and present recommendations to optimize grant recovery
- Manage grant reporting in line with provincial and federal funding restrictions and requirements
- Support the in-flight Vena implementation while maintaining Excel- and Power Query-based reporting
- Extract transactional data from NetSuite and build reporting through Power Query and Power BI
- Handle elevated ad hoc reporting requests and approval reviews as needed
What You Bring
- FP&A leadership experience in a not-for-profit, Ministry-funded, or government grant-funded environment
- Detailed working knowledge of provincial and federal grant restrictions and reporting requirements
- Proven ability to build budgets from scratch in unstructured environments
- Strong communication skills with a track record of business partnering with non-finance teams
- Ability to coach, mentor, and motivate early-career staff
- Hands-on proficiency with Excel, Power Query, and Power BI; comfort extracting and manipulating transactional data
- Change management skills and the ability to get up to speed quickly
- A roll-up-your-sleeves approach — willing to help wherever needed
Nice to Have
- Vena (or similar planning tool) implementation experience
- NetSuite experience
- Microsoft Dynamics / NAV reporting experience
- Healthcare or community care sector exposure (e.g., AlayaCare or similar EHR environments)
