The Opportunity
We are now seeking a Group Financial Controller to join the Chief Finance Office.
The Group Financial Controller will oversee all corporate financial management, regulatory accounting, and capital expenditure control for the group's rapidly expanding state backed electricity infrastructure assets. This Director-level role reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and leads reporting lines to key state shareholders.
The Director balances public-sector accountability with strong commercial growth. This role commands director-level financial governance over a multi-billion-euro capital investment programme (grid modernization and renewable integration). It places a heavy emphasis on advanced Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), rigorous financial reporting, and the management of a critical Financial Business Partner (FBP) model embedded across the business including engineering and asset operations.
The Team
The Finance Chief Office is responsible for establishing a strong and credible financial position to enable EirGrid to secure regulatory funding, attract sustainable finance and commit to major infrastructure programmes. By enhancing our existing financial governance, the Chief Office aims to create clear and strong frameworks, ensuring a strong control environment, continued transparency, accountability, and resilience.
Key Responsibilities
- Shareholder Communication: Lead the preparation and delivery of statutory financial reporting packages for the holding minister and Department officials at the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment (DCEE).
- Regulatory Compliance: Direct all regulatory accounting and reporting frameworks dictated by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) and price review determinations.
- Statutory Audit Oversight: Coordinate and manage the statutory audit relationship with the external auditors.
- Public Governance: Ensure absolute compliance with the Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies.
- Long-Term Financial Modelling: Lead the design and execution of long-term financial models to support strategic 5-year corporate plans and national grid expansion strategy.
- Agile Forecasting: Implement rolling forecast methodologies that adapt to changing scenarios, shifting external factors, and regulatory price control changes.
- Scenario Planning: Conduct financial sensitivity analysis and stress-testing on macro-economic shifts, interest rates, and commodity pricing.
- Commercial Valuation: Appraise business cases, joint ventures, and new revenue streams various analytics.
- Group Consolidation: Direct the timely monthly and annual consolidation of accounts for the electricity group, its commercial subsidiaries, and joint ventures.
- Directorate & Board Dashboards: Deliver data-driven financial reporting packages and performance dashboards for the Board, CFO, and shareholder representatives.
- FBP Model Leadership: Manage a high-performing Financial Business Partnering team aligned with all areas of the business including engineering and asset operations.
- Capital Oversight: Provide director-level financial control for the group's multiyear, multi-billion-euro capital investment programme.
- Systems Futureproofing: Upgrade the group ERP and reporting architecture to support automated data flows for business partnering and regulatory audits.
About You
- Professional accounting qualification required (e.g., Chartered Accountants Ireland, ACCA Ireland, CIMA, or CPA).
- A third level qualification in a relevant discipline for example Accounting, Finance, Engineering Economics, or Business.
- Minimum 8–10 years of post-qualification experience with a proven track record in a Director level or senior financial management role.
- Shareholder Reporting: Direct experience preparing financial briefings for government departments, state shareholders, or institutional boards.
- FP&A Expertise: Proven track record of managing a sophisticated FP&A function within a capital-intensive or multi-entity business.
- FBP Model Success: Direct experience leading, scaling, or managing a Financial Business Partner model across a decentralised corporate layout.
- Regulated Sector Mastery: Extensive experience in a regulated utility, commercial semi-state body, or highly regulated heavy infrastructure environment.
- Scale-Up & Transformation: Proven track record of leading a finance function through major organizational growth, cultural change, or ERP transformation.
- Major Projects Control: Experience on capital infrastructure portfolios exceeding €500m+.
- Regulated Environment Fluency: Deep knowledge of Regulated Asset Base (RAB) mechanisms, price review determinations, and relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Influence & Diplomacy: Elite communication and stakeholder management skills to influence Executives, engineering directors, and state shareholders.
