SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Department Director or designee and in accordance with Brown University Health policies/procedures and generally accepted accounting principles, provides financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, accounting and reconciliation services for research projects, program activities and department finances in general. This position maintains budgets and financial forecasts, and reviews and reconciles information from Workday and other institutional financial systems. Furthermore, this position will provide financial analyses and support for other special departmental projects sound as needed and assigned by the Director/Department Administrators.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Recommends overall financial objectives, strategies and policies consistent with approved purposes and objectives.
Conducts routine budget-to-actual reviews, monitors financial performance, identifies variances and trends, and advises Principal Investigators and Department Administrators of potential concerns and recommended corrective actions.
Analyzes the financial impact of personnel changes, effort adjustments, purchasing activity, subawards, and other significant award activities.
Prepares and maintains timely financial reports and customized analyses that communicate the financial status of research grants and projects to Principal Investigators and Department Administrators.
Utilizes Workday and other institutional systems to monitor financial activity and reviews transactions, worktags, payroll, purchasing activity, invoices, and other financial data for accuracy and appropriate allocation.
Provides financial information to support grant renewals, progress reports, no-cost extensions, carryforward requests, and other award actions.
Identifies and assists with resolving accounting discrepancies, incorrect allocations, and other financial issues in coordination with Principal Investigators, Department Administrators, and institutional financial partners.
Assists with financial reconciliation and analysis during award closeout.
Monitors award end dates and proactively identifies financial activities requiring completion before closeout.
Maintains and enhances professional expertise and skills through participation in appropriate educational and training seminars related to financial reporting.
Performs other duties as necessary.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related field required.
Broad professional knowledge in business management, financial analysis and accounting practices, with the ability to provide financial guidance and direction required.
Must demonstrate strong numerical aptitude and exceptional attention to detail.
Familiarity with the full sponsored award lifecycle, including financial monitoring, reporting, and closeout preferred.
Interest in learning about public health and working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment preferred.
Must have working knowledge of computers, file management, MS Excel and other software used to effectively track budgets, project estimates, financial analysis and projections, and project status reports.
Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and collaborate effectively with investigators, research administrators, and financial partners.
EXPERIENCE:
Requires 3+ years of previous related experience in financial analysis, financial management and operations. Experience in sponsored research, clinical, and academic environments preferred.
Knowledge of federal regulations governing sponsored research, including NIH and Uniform Guidance requirements.
Experience with Workday or similar financial management systems.
Experience in Microsoft Office software, spreadsheet and database management software and applications is required.
Requires ability to learn new systems and applications with limited formal training.
Strong organizational skills and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail.
Ability to prioritize, manage deadlines and redirect and refocus as needed.
Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate the financial considerations and impacts of project accounting, reporting, managing, negotiating between members of the research teams, and effectively interacting with all levels of research program personnel and outside contractors and consultants.
