The Financial Analyst Investigator is responsible for conducting complex financial investigations and forensic accounting analyses in support of criminal, civil, regulatory, and litigation matters. This position applies advanced accounting, auditing, and investigative expertise to analyze financial records, identify irregularities, reconstruct financial transactions, and develop findings that support legal proceedings. The role works closely with attorneys, law enforcement agencies, auditors, and other stakeholders to deliver accurate, defensible, and well-documented financial analyses.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct complex financial, criminal, and civil investigations involving forensic accounting and financial analysis.
- Analyze, evaluate, and interpret financial data for use in litigation, investigations, and enforcement actions.
- Serve as the lead analyst or in-charge auditor on assigned audit and investigative engagements.
- Independently plan, initiate, and execute investigative assignments with minimal supervision.
- Review and assess financial records, including tax returns, financial statements, bank and brokerage records, loan documents, accounting work papers, general ledgers, journals, accounts payable, and accounts receivable records.
- Reconstruct incomplete, missing, or destroyed financial records and transactions to support investigative objectives.
- Identify additional records, information, and evidence to complete investigations and recommend methods for obtaining such information.
- Collaborate with Assistant United States Attorneys, law enforcement personnel, auditors, and other investigative partners throughout the investigation lifecycle.
- Assist with planning, conducting, and documenting witness interviews and other investigative activities.
- Prepare comprehensive reports, exhibits, schedules, and other supporting documentation that clearly communicate investigative findings to both financial and non-financial audiences.
- Present findings and conclusions in written and verbal formats suitable for legal, regulatory, and executive audiences.
- Provide expert support during litigation and court proceedings; testimony experience is preferred.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification .
- In lieu of an Accounting degree, a Bachelor’s degree in Finance or a related discipline may be accepted with a minimum of three (3) years of auditing experience.
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Forensic Accounting, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of federal law enforcement, forensic accounting, financial investigations, auditing, or closely related experience .
- Formal training and professional certifications in forensic accounting, investigations, fraud examination, auditing, or related specialties preferred.
- Experience working with electronic databases and financial information systems .
- Experience supporting litigation and providing courtroom testimony preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Extensive knowledge of accounting principles, auditing standards, forensic accounting practices, and financial investigative techniques.
- Ability to analyze complex financial transactions and identify trends, anomalies, fraud indicators, and evidentiary findings.
- Knowledge of financial records, billing systems, payment processes, and accounting practices across various industries.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to independently manage multiple investigative assignments and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in researching, organizing, and evaluating large volumes of financial and investigative data.
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports and exhibits.
- Strong verbal communication and presentation skills, including the ability to explain complex financial matters to non-financial audiences.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, auditors, investigators, law enforcement personnel, and external stakeholders.
- Experience using electronic databases, financial analysis tools, and investigative software applications.
- Demonstrated leadership, coordination, and liaison skills in multidisciplinary investigative environments.
- Ability to prepare findings suitable for litigation, regulatory review, and courtroom proceedings.
