POSITION EMPHASIS: This position supports NEA’s strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3 million members toward the promotion of public education by providing high-level financial analysis, business management, and accounting expertise in support of the Business and Financial Services Department.
POSITION SUMMARY: The incumbent performs a wide range of complex accounting functions, including preparing monthly diversified financial statements and reports, government reporting and income tax returns, account analyses for assigned accounts, cash receipt reviews, year-end audit, and insurance payments. The role is responsible for coordinating audit preparation activities, conducting a full range of financial analyses and forecasting, preparing financial statements and consolidated schedules, and resolving problems as encountered. The incumbent will be responsible for various regulatory and compliance filings and reports, such as NEA Corporate Income Tax, other federal and state income tax returns, economic census reports, asset and capital expenditure reports, personal property reports, FEC reports, Internal Revenue Service reports, and Department of Labor reports. Other essential functions include preparing and conducting a detailed monthly review and analysis of accounts/sub-accounts, including the review, synthesis, and analysis of financial information. The incumbent will keep current on and monitor pending legislative and regulatory issues and environments to understand the potential impact on assigned accounts, and provide consultation to NEA staff, state affiliates, governance, vendors, auditors, fiduciaries, actuaries, and functional board/committee members on documentation, financial records, processes, and procedures.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills is obtained. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of four years of professional accounting and financial management experience. Experience as a professional accountant with responsibilities in a combination of the following: general ledger, accounts payable, account analysis, bank reconciliation, cash flow management, forecasting, and financial reports and statements. Advanced spreadsheet capability and proficiency in automated accounting systems, such as PeopleSoft, SAP, Oracle Financials or similar systems. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work in-person, extended hours on some evenings and weekends, and travel 10-20 overnights per year. Samples of recent work products (e.g., financial statements, spreadsheets, or presentation materials) may be required at the interview.
SELECTION CRITERIA: TIER 1 (Essential): Demonstrated experience as a full-charge Accountant or Financial Analyst adhering to General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Generally Accepted Auditing Standard (GAAS), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and federal, state, and local requirements. Proven skill in diversified accounting, financial management operations, and complex problem resolution. Demonstrated experience in general ledger, financial statement, and audit preparation using advanced spreadsheet applications (preferably Excel). Experience in business process design, benchmarking, regulatory and compliance issues and financial audits. Highly effective analytical, interpersonal and customer relations’ skills, including proven service-oriented attitude. Demonstrated flexibility to work under stringent timeframes and changing priorities or conditions. Proven ability in investigating financial records, writing reports, and making presentations to senior management. Successful references. TIER 2 (Significant): Knowledge of nonprofit accounting and accounting and tracking of grants. Demonstrated effective organizational, project management, and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability in facilitating cooperative interaction amongst individuals and groups at all levels of the organization (e.g., user and systems departments). Certified Public Accountant preferred. TIER 3 (Desirable): Knowledge of NEA’s business environment, strategic focus, policies, and programs. Experience with a non-profit association or union. Experience in interpreting and applying the rules and regulations related to completing the IRS Form 990 and 5500. Familiarity with LM-2 form.
