Director, Investments Tax (Charlotte, NC (Hybrid) or Remote)

How you’ll contribute:

As an Investment Tax Director, you’ll be responsible for all aspects of tax accounting and compliance with respect to the Company’s investment portfolio. The Company invests domestically and internationally in a wide array of asset classes in its General Account as well as Separately Managed Accounts, including, but not limited to, real estate, derivatives, mortgages, securities, REMIC, private equity, and joint venture partnership investments. This position will report into the Leader, Income Tax Accounting, Reporting and Compliance.

In this role, you’ll get to:

• Review and/or prepare book to tax adjustment calculations for the Company’s investments for financial statement close and in connection with preparation of the Company’s federal and state income tax returns.
• Actively participate in the preparation of the Company’s federal income tax return, including but not limited to, review and/or preparation of forms relating to investments activity (e.g., Form 8621, Form 8949, Schedule D, etc.), return to provision, and tax basis balance sheets.
• Maintain tax basis balance sheets/tax basis calculations with respect to the Company’s investments.  This will include annual validation of tax basis in bonds, stocks, partnerships, REMICs and other investments and maintenance of appropriate documentation.
• Perform tax technical research and evaluate impact of investments transactions (e.g., new derivatives, exchanges, etc.).  Communicate findings to impacted stakeholders.
• Support tax review of new investments (e.g., review of side letters and partnership agreements, etc).
• Maintain control environment and ensure compliance with SOX requirements with respect to Investments tax accounting and compliance.
• Participate in or lead adhoc projects within and outside of Tax (e.g., Funding Agreement Backed Notes Issuances, tax process improvements, etc.). 
• Identify, manage, and document FIN 48 Uncertain Tax Positions related to investments, including technical and quantitative analysis, advice, and reporting.
• Support tax audits, as needed, including preparation and/or review of responses to audit requests.
• Support tax planning including identification, analysis, and implementation of tax planning strategies.
• Support tax advocacy though participation in ACLI and other trade organizations, as appropriate.
• Collaborate with Investment Operations and Investment Accounting teams, as necessary, to provide relevant tax support, to ensure tax data needs are met and/or to communicate significant tax developments which may impact Investment Operations and Investment Accounting processes/procedures.

We’re looking for people who have:

• CPA (preferred).
• Master’s degree in Tax or Accounting (preferred).
• 8 -12 years of investment tax experience at a life insurance or financial services company or at a nationally recognized accounting firm, or a combination thereof.
• Technical acumen and experience in life insurance tax compliance and tax accounting (i.e., Form 1120L, ASC 740, SSAP 101).
• In depth knowledge and understanding of US GAAP and tax accounting principles as related to investments, including experience with FAS 115 and 133 and Internal Revenue Code and related regulations, IRS guidance and case law.
• Understanding of diverse domestic and international asset types, including derivatives, PFICs, RICs, REITs, REMICs, private equity, mortgages, debt and equity securities, and joint venture partnerships.
• Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Alteryx expertise helpful, but not required.
• Experience using CorpTax, investment accounting systems (PAM for Investments) and general ledger systems (SAP).
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
• Strong accounting, analytical, and tax technical research skills.
• Ability to manage issues and projects across Tax and business partners.
• Ability to clearly communicate complex financial and process-related information to management.
• Ability to manage multiple complex tasks towards completion at the same time.

• Compensation –Base salary ranging from $160,000 to $185,000 plus competitive performance-based incentives determined by company and individual results.
