Director of Accounting

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary:

The Director of Accounting is responsible for day-to-day operational accounting and financial responsibilities. The position provides leadership and oversight of accounting functions; ensures accurate financial reporting; maintains compliance with regulatory and funding requirements; supports audit and fiscal review activities; and supervises finance staff. The Director of Accounting serves as a key operational partner to the Vice President of Finance, ensuring the integrity of financial data and the effectiveness of financial processes.

Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Financial Reporting and Analysis

• Review and analyze monthly financial statements for accuracy, trends, and unusual transactions.
• Identify and communicate significant financial variances, risks, and concerns.
• Assist in maintaining the integrity of financial data used for organizational reporting and decision-making.

2. Accounting Operations and Reconciliations

• Manage complex accounting transactions, including restricted revenue, deferred revenue, and net assets released from restriction.
• Reconcile accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, and other schedules on a quarterly basis. Reconcile monthly bank statements.
• Support accurate accounting processes and internal controls throughout the organization.

3. Budget, Audit, and Financial Compliance Support

• Assist the Vice President of Finance with the development of organizational budgets.
• Lead financial, deferred compensation, and health and welfare audit engagements. Provide financial expertise and support during fiscal reviews and monitoring.
• Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), funding requirements, and internal financial policies.

4. Risk Management and Process Improvement

• Monitor and mitigate financial risks identified through audits and internal reviews.
• Implement operational processes that support organizational strategic initiatives.
• Identify opportunities to improve workflows, strengthen internal controls, and increase operational efficiency.
• Assist in evaluating and implementing system enhancements that improve financial operations.

5. Leadership and Team Development

• Provide direct supervision of accounting and finance support staff, including the Staff Accountant, Accounts Payable Manager, Payroll staff, Purchasing staff, and Fiscal Assistant.
• Deliver ongoing coaching, training, and development opportunities to finance personnel.
• Foster a collaborative, customer-service-oriented, and accountable work environment.
• Promote continuous improvement and professional growth within the finance team.

*Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or certification preferred in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
• Four to six years of related experience in nonprofit financial management or accounting, with progressive responsibility.
• Minimum of two years of supervisory experience, including team leadership and coaching.
