Controller – P&C Insurance

Job Summary

A leading Property & Casualty insurance carrier is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee Corporate Accounting and Premium Accounting functions. This role will be responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of financial reporting, including statutory and GAAP financial statements, FP&A, budgeting, forecasting, tax, treasury, and audit activities. The Controller will also oversee premium accounting operations, including cash receipts, refunds, commissions, and related cash processing activities. This position will play a key role in partnering with senior leadership on financial strategy, operational performance, and business planning.

This role requires strong Property & Casualty insurance accounting experience and a deep understanding of statutory accounting.

Location: Onsite in either Orlando or Sarasota, Florida

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the preparation, review, and timely submission of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements on both a statutory and GAAP basis.
• Prepare and/or review annual consolidated GAAP financial statements, statutory financial statements, and related footnote disclosures.
• Lead and serve as the primary accounting contact for annual external audits and examinations.
• Partner with internal audit and external auditors to support audit activities, reviews, and remediation efforts.
• Ensure proper accounting for reinsurance contracts and timely collection of reinsurance recoveries.
• Support the analysis and evaluation of reinsurance strategies.
• Ensure timely and accurate submission of regulatory and financial reports to applicable agencies and financial institutions.
• Prepare and review FP&A reporting to evaluate financial and operational performance and support strategic decision-making.
• Partner with Finance leadership and the executive team to analyze business performance and support long-term financial planning.
• Support the development, review, and compliance of Managing General Agency agreements and related financial requirements.
• Partner with department leaders to develop, implement, and maintain cost center budgets.
• Monitor actual results against budgets and forecasts and provide analysis of significant variances.
• Oversee accounting systems, processes, and internal controls to ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial data.
• Review monthly budget-to-actual reporting and provide meaningful financial analysis to leadership.
• Oversee cash processing, lockbox functions, and related treasury activities.
• Monitor and forecast cash activity to ensure appropriate liquidity and cash flow.
• Oversee the preparation and review of quarterly and annual tax provisions.
• Ensure accurate and timely federal and state income tax reporting.
• Identify opportunities for cost savings, efficiency improvements, and cost containment.
• Lead or participate in special projects, financial analyses, and other strategic initiatives as needed.
• Provide timely and accurate financial information and analysis to Finance leadership and executive management.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
• CPA preferred.
• MBA or Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance is highly valued.
• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• 5+ years of Property & Casualty insurance accounting experience required.
• 4+ years of management/supervisory experience.
• In-depth knowledge of statutory accounting principles and P&C insurance accounting practices required.
• Strong working knowledge of GAAP and regulatory accounting requirements.
• Demonstrated experience with statutory and GAAP financial reporting, including annual statutory filings and related disclosures.
• Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, financial statements, FP&A, investments, income tax, treasury, and cash management.
• Strong understanding of insurance-specific accounting and financial reporting requirements.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
• Experience with financial reporting systems and accounting software.
• Crystal Reports experience is a plus.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and strategic thinking skills.
• Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop accounting professionals.
• Ability to take ownership of projects and responsibilities while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Compensation

Base Salary: $150,000 – $170,000
