JOB DESCRIPTION
The Controller is an executive-level leadership role, serving as a key member of the Leadership Team and reporting directly to the President. The Controller is accountable for the overall leadership, management, and accountability (LMA) across all Finance, Accounting, and Information Technology functions.
This individual serves as both:
- A strategic financial advisor to the President and Leadership Team, providing high-level operational insight, cash flow oversight, forecasting, and scalable system controls.
- A hands-on operational leader, managing a direct team of approximately 7–8 members across Accounting, Payroll, and IT, willing to roll up their sleeves to ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance, and process excellence.
We are seeking a highly detail-oriented, values-driven leader who thrives in a collaborative, open-door environment, embraces EOS principles, and balances analytical rigor with supportive team coaching.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Financial Leadership & Executive Partnership
- Serve as a strategic financial partner to the President and executive Leadership Team, translating financial data into actionable business strategy.
- Provide clear risk assessments, financial modeling, and operational KPI reporting to guide company decision-making.
- Actively participate in EOS quarterly and annual planning, driving financial "Rocks" and holding the finance function accountable to company scorecards.
Accounting, Reporting & Financial Close
- Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, job costing, billing, and financial reconciliations.
- Own the financial close process, ensuring timely and accurate quarterly/annual financial statements, with a strategic goal of transitioning toward monthly closed reporting.
- Maintain strict GAAP compliance, tax filings (sales/use tax), and coordinate external accounting, R&D tax credit, insurance, and workers' compensation audits.
Cash Flow Management & Treasury
- Actively manage weekly cash positions, liquidity forecasts, and working capital to support operational stability and growth.
- Oversee weekly payment batches for material suppliers, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Oversee accounts receivable aging and collection strategies, ensuring healthy Days Sales Outstanding (DSO).
Construction & Project Accounting Oversight
- Collaborate monthly with Project Managers and Construction leaders to conduct Cost-to-Complete reviews and maintain accurate contract schedules (WIP).
- Monitor job-cost accuracy across both project-based construction (60% revenue) and short-term service operations (40% revenue).
- Support the integration and implementation of specialized operational software tools (e.g., BuildOps for field service and Spreadsheet Server for data extraction).
People Leadership, Coaching & Payroll/IT Oversight
- Directly lead, mentor, and develop a team of ~7–8 members covering Accounting, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Billing, Payroll, and IT.
- Provide coaching and hands-on support to developing team members (such as the Payroll Manager and internal accounting staff), fostering a culture of quality, trust, and continuous learning.
- Ensure payroll processes are executed accurately, maintaining oversight of union wage rates, certified payroll filings, prevailing wage compliance, and monthly union trust fund contributions across DC, MD, and VA.
Process Improvement & Internal Controls
- Design, implement, and maintain strong internal controls to ensure data integrity and safeguard company assets.
- Drive process automation and efficiency improvements across financial, payroll and IT workflows.
- Ensure the accounting team focuses on high-quality work and problem-solving rather than simply checking a box to complete tasks.
REQUIREMENTS
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience managing accounting, financial reporting, cash flow, and budgeting functions.
- Extensive knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting, and internal controls.
- Proven track record of leading, mentoring, and developing operational/accounting teams with a supportive, coaching mindset.
- High level of natural attention to detail, accuracy, and process ownership.
- Willingness to be hands-on in the daily work and financial entries when necessary, balancing high-level leadership with tactical execution.
- Alignment with core values of integrity, humility, teamwork, and doing the right thing for the greater good.
- Ability to work full-time on-site in Lanham, Maryland.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in construction, specialty contracting, or mechanical contracting finance.
- Familiarity with subcontractor/general contractor business dynamics, job costing, WIP (Work-In-Progress) accounting, and percentage-of-completion reporting.
- Experience with Viewpoint Vista ERP or Spreadsheet Server data-mining tools.
- Prior exposure to union contractor accounting, certified payroll, prevailing wages, and union benefit trust fund reporting.
- CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant) designation.
- Working knowledge or familiarity with EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) frameworks.
EDUCATION
