Location: Richmond, VA (Hybrid: 2–3 days onsite per week)

About Child Evangelism Fellowship of Virginia
Child Evangelism Fellowship of Virginia (CEF of VA) is a statewide Christian nonprofit ministry dedicated to reaching children with the Gospel and supporting local chapters across Virginia. We are seeking a mission‑aligned Controller to strengthen our financial operations, modernize systems, and support both state and chapter‑level financial stewardship.
Position Summary
The Controller is the organization’s primary financial leader, responsible for financial strategy, internal controls, accounting oversight, and process improvement. This role is ideal for a self‑starter who can build systems, document procedures, and support a multi‑entity nonprofit structure. The Controller will also play a key role in implementing a donor CRM and ensuring strong financial stewardship across the state and its local chapters.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Accounting
- Establish and maintain financial policies, internal controls, and accounting procedures
- Oversee revenue processing, donor receipting, deposits, and fund classification
- Review disbursements, expense reports, and vendor setups
- Ensure integrity of the general ledger and proper coding
- Oversee transfers between state and local chapters
- Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of deputized fundraiser balances in alignment with donor intent
- Review bank reconciliations and monthly financial activity
- Analyze financial statements and budget-to-actual variances
- Review journal entries, accruals, and reclassifications
- Prepare financial reports for the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Board
- Support consolidated reporting across state and chapter entities
- Oversee banking relationships and online banking administration
- Maintain internal controls for cash handling, transfers, and FDIC exposure
- Establish credit card policies and controls
- Advise leadership on investment activity and financial risk
- Oversee payroll systems and ensure compliance
- Review payroll reports and ensure proper accounting
- Oversee retirement plan administration (GuideStone) and eligibility tracking
- Lead annual budgeting and financial planning
- Support local chapters in budget development
- Monitor budget performance and provide financial insights
- Oversee Form 990 and Virginia state filings
- Coordinate with external accountants and tax preparers
- Oversee 1099 reporting and sales tax compliance
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations and CEF USA requirements
- Prepare financial reporting packages
- Participate in Finance Committee meetings
- Provide financial insights and document implications of Board decisions
- Monitor chapter financial performance
- Provide training and guidance to chapter treasurers
- Promote consistency in financial practices statewide
- Support onboarding of new treasurers
- Develop and document financial procedures
- Oversee QuickBooks architecture
- Support implementation of a donor CRM and system integrations
- Lead process improvements and ensure proper documentation and record retention
Required
- Active involvement in a local church
- Agreement with the CEF Statement of Faith and Ministry Compliance Agreement
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5+ years of nonprofit accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting
- Proficiency in QuickBooks and Excel
- Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls
- Ability to work independently and build processes from the ground up
- Experience with donor CRM systems
- Experience with multi‑entity or chapter‑based organizations
- Familiarity with payroll systems (e.g., ADP)
- CPA or similar credential (preferred but not required)
- Initiative and ownership

- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to communicate financial concepts to non‑financial stakeholders
- Hybrid schedule with 2–3 days onsite in Richmond, VA
- Flexible part‑time hours within standard business hours
- Attendance at Board and Finance Committee meetings as needed
- Occasional in‑state travel
This role requires full alignment with the mission, vision, and Statement of Faith of Child Evangelism Fellowship. The Controller must conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the organization’s Christian beliefs and values.

Simply stated, CEF Virginia trains ministry teams who volunteer to conduct evangelistic events usually outside the church walls. Child Evangelism Fellowship of Virginia serves churches and individuals by equipping them to fulfill the great commission. We help them to be an ambassador for Christ, equipping them to reconcile the lost with the message of the gospel.
CEF Virginia serves all of the state chapters throughout Virginia. We have several different ministries for children such as the Good News Club, 5-Day Club and CYIA. We host several events through these ministries thereby serving the churches with proven children’s ministry training, materials and methods. This in turn allows us to lead the chapter communities in evangelizing children
