The Position

Cloudbreak Energy is seeking a Controller to own and manage all accounting across the company as we scale our development and operating portfolio. Reporting to the VP of Finance, you will be responsible for the integrity of Cloudbreak's financial records, managing all external accountants including the financial statement audit, and the timely production of accurate financial statements prepared in accordance with U.S. GAAP that our counterparties and capital partners rely on.

This is a high-impact role at a pivotal moment in our growth. You will build and refine the accounting function from the ground up, bringing rigor and structure while remaining hands-on. The ideal candidate has direct experience in renewable energy accounting across both development and operating assets, including assets financed with debt and tax equity, and understands what it takes to support a fast-moving, capital-intensive business.

Job Responsibilities

• Accounting Management: Own and manage all accounting functions across Cloudbreak Energy, including the general ledger, month-end and year-end close, accounts payable and receivable, payroll accounting, and the maintenance of accurate books and records prepared in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
• External Audit Process: Manage Cloudbreak's external audit process end to end, serving as the primary point of contact for auditors, preparing audit-ready schedules and support, and ensuring audits are completed accurately and on schedule.
• Financial Statement Production & Timeline Management: Coordinate with our external accountants on the preparation of both audited and unaudited financial statements prepared in accordance with U.S. GAAP, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely delivery. Develop a clear understanding of the timelines for receiving financial statements from our external accountants so that we can negotiate effectively with counterparties that request these deliverables and consistently meet our contractual and financing commitments.
• Renewable Energy & Technical Accounting: Apply specialized accounting expertise and U.S. GAAP principles to Cloudbreak's development and operating assets, ensuring accounting treatments are accurate, consistent, and compliant with U.S. GAAP. Lead the research, interpretation, application, and documentation of U.S. GAAP for complex accounting matters, including debt and tax equity financing arrangements, revenue recognition, capitalization of development costs, asset impairment, project-level and entity-level reporting, and the unique accounting considerations associated with renewable energy project structures. Document technical accounting analyses and conclusions to support audit readiness, consistency in accounting application, and compliance with U.S. GAAP.
• Internal Controls & System Implementation: Design, implement, and continuously improve internal controls, accounting policies, workflows, and systems that scale with the company and safeguard financial integrity.
• Financial Reporting & Analysis: Deliver timely and accurate internal financial reporting prepared in accordance with U.S. GAAP to the VP of Finance and leadership team to support decision-making, budgeting, and forecasting.
• Stakeholder Coordination: Collaborate closely with external accountants, auditors, tax advisors, lenders, tax equity investors, and internal business units to keep financial operations running smoothly.
• Tax Compliance & Oversight: Oversee tax compliance activities by coordinating with external tax preparers and advisors, reviewing tax filings and related work product, and ensuring the accounting implications of income taxes, tax equity structures, and other tax matters are appropriately reflected in the financial statements. Monitor compliance with regulatory requirements and financing covenants, ensuring timely completion of all reporting obligations.
• Treasury Support: Support cash management, treasury operations, and the reconciliation of project- and corporate-level accounts.
• Team Building: Build and mentor the accounting team over time as the company grows.

• CPA required.
• 10+ years of accounting experience, with meaningful time spent in renewable energy accounting across both development and operating assets. Candidates with experience in other capital-intensive, project-based industries (real estate, infrastructure, oil & gas) or financial services backgrounds will also be considered.
• Direct experience accounting for assets financed with debt and tax equity is required.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and experience managing external audits and coordinating the production of audited and unaudited financial statements prepared in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
• Experience building or scaling an accounting function at a growth-stage company preferred.
• A hands-on leader who is equally comfortable setting accounting policy and preparing a reconciliation. No task is beneath you.
• Exceptional organizational skills, a high degree of ownership, and a keen eye for detail. You follow through, you keep things moving, and you don't let things fall through the cracks.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain accounting concepts clearly to non-accountants.
• Growth mindset: you're excited to build something.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; a combination of public accounting and industry experience is a plus.
• Boulder-based or willing to relocate strongly preferred.

• Competitive salary: $150,000 – $200,000, depending on experience.

  Occasional travel may be required for team offsites and company events. The expected salary range and benefits package is noted above. However, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
