Controller
Clarity Recruitment • Toronto, Ontario • Full Time
Posted on Thu, Jun 25, 2026
Employment Type: Full-Time
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid, 3 days in office)
Salary: $125,000–$135,000
About the Opportunity
Our client is a privately held mining and processing company operating a single Canadian asset, with corporate functions based in downtown Toronto. They produce high-grade iron ore concentrate sold to steel producers across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia — a business with real operational complexity driven by a large asset base, capital-intensive infrastructure, and continuous improvement across processing and finance.
This Controller role reports directly to the Chief Accounting Officer. The scope is hands-on: you'll own the full financial reporting cycle for both the corporate and site entity, act as a key liaison with debt holders and shareholders on ongoing financial communications, and manage a site-based Financial Analyst. The function is lean and the mandate is meaningful — you're both a preparer and a reviewer, depending on the workstream.
What makes this role interesting is the greenfield element. Internal controls and accounting processes are being built from the ground up, and there's real latitude to put your mark on how this finance function operates.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the full monthly and quarterly close cycle, including P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, and inventory reporting
- Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements for CAO review; act as reviewer for site financials prepared by the Financial Analyst
- Own budgeting and forecasting for the asset; deliver variance analysis and management reporting
- Manage ongoing financial communications with debt holders and shareholders, including reporting on debt and interest payments
- Design and implement internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures (currently being built from scratch)
- Coordinate external audit and manage relationships with auditors, financial institutions, and external advisors
- Partner with site personnel to monitor costs, track KPIs, and support operational decision-making
- Supervise, mentor, and develop the site-based Financial Analyst, who handles the full set of books for the mine site
- Identify and drive process improvements across accounting and reporting functions
- Support system and AP automation initiatives as needed
What You Bring
- CPA designation
- Experience in public accounting with exposure to clients in mining, manufacturing, or large asset-base industries — or progressive industry accounting experience at the manager level
- Strong technical accounting foundation: full-cycle close, financial statement preparation, reconciliations, and budgeting/forecasting
- IFRS knowledge and comfort with accounting research
- Experience with or exposure to USD/CAD multi-currency environments
- Comfortable operating as both a preparer and a reviewer in a lean finance team
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with a remote, site-based team
Nice to Have
- Direct mining industry experience
- Exposure to internal controls design or process documentation
- Experience with Ellipse or similar ERP systems
- Advanced Excel skills
