Snapshot:
The AP Senior Accountant is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and timely completion of accounts payable accounting activities, financial reporting, reconciliations, and period-end close responsibilities. This role serves as a key accounting resource supporting Operations and Finance by ensuring liabilities and expenses are properly recorded, reconciled, and reported in accordance with GAAP and company policies. The successful candidate will play a critical role in maintaining financial accuracy, strengthening internal controls, supporting audit readiness, and driving continuous improvement within the accounts payable function.
A Day in the Life:
- Lead accounts payable-related month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities.
- Prepare and review AP-related journal entries, accruals, reclassifications, and adjusting entries.
- Ensure liabilities and expenses are accurately recorded in the appropriate accounting period.
- Review AP aging, invoice holds, and outstanding transactions to ensure timely resolution.
- Perform and review balance sheet reconciliations.
- Investigate reconciling items, aging balances, variances, and unusual transactions.
- Analyze AP activity and trends to identify reporting issues and opportunities for improvement.
- Provide financial analysis supporting the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting standards, and company policies.
- Support and strengthen AP approval workflows, segregation of duties, and fraud-prevention controls.
- Assist with 1099 reporting and vendor tax documentation requirements.
- Support internal and external audit activities.
- Provide guidance, training, and support to Accounts Payable team members.
- Assist with special projects, system improvements, and strategic accounting initiatives.
- Collaborate with Operations, Finance, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Five or more years of progressive accounting experience with significant accounts payable responsibility.
- Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accruals, reconciliations, and financial close processes.
- Solid understanding of GAAP and internal control principles.
- Experience preparing journal entries, reconciliations, financial analysis, and audit support documentation.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems.
- High attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and accountability.
- Ability to work collaboratively while maintaining ownership of key responsibilities.
- CPA certification or progress toward CPA designation preferred.
- Experience in high-volume, multi-entity, project-based, or centralized AP environments preferred.
- Experience supporting AP automation initiatives and ERP implementations preferred.
- Experience with 1099 reporting and vendor compliance requirements preferred.
- Experience with online banking platforms and electronic payment systems preferred.
- Exposure to third-party payment systems and AP technologies preferred.
- Continuous improvement mindset focused on efficiency, scalability, and risk reduction.
