Summary

The General Accounting Manager is responsible for managing the general accounting staff, accuracy and completeness of the accounting records, and ensuring proper process controls are in place in a shared services environment. Responsibilities include overall administration and implementation of the group’s objectives in conjunction with company goals and objectives to include teaming with supporting units to successfully achieve those objectives.

• Management responsibility for the services and activities of the general accounting team in a shared services environment in accordance with the department policies, procedures, and service level agreements.
• Directly supervise non-supervisory employees. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training and professional development; mentoring, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving issues.
• Coordinate and participate in the timely completion of the monthly financial close ensuring management’s estimates are reasonable, in accordance with GAAP, and all balance sheet accounts are reconciled on a periodic basis.
• Participate in the development, review and improvement of the organization’s policies, procedures and internal controls; review operational compliance to ensure proper controls are in place.
• Provide accounting and financial system guidance to management and staff throughout the company.
• Participate in the annual budget process and provide budget assistance to management and staff. Manage monthly and annual forecast budgets.
• Assist in the year end audit process and monitor and coordinate staff assignments to ensure schedules and documents are prepared consistently, accurately, and according to schedule.
• Assign, coordinate, and review tax schedules, government reports, and ad-hoc reports as requested.
• Ensure completion of state and local tax returns and resolve all related issues. Assist with management of government agency audits.

Competencies:

• In-depth knowledge of financial analysis and financial accounting systems.
• Government Cost Accounting understanding and experience 
• Excellent accounting skills including current knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Financial Accounting Standards and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards.
• Excellent analytical abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Must be a team player.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
• Advanced Computer skills, with the ability to utilize standard software applications and be proficient in Windows and MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
• Use professional and/or technical concepts to perform assigned duties and solve complex problems.
• Evaluate financial systems and practices and make appropriate recommendations for improvement.
• Develop and implement financial procedures and controls.
• Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive financial statements, reports and written materials.
• Manage multiple tasks, set objectives/goals and re-prioritize as needed.
• Work cooperatively with other divisions and management, i.e., create effective partnerships throughout the organization.
• Work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities.
• Respond tactfully, clearly, concisely and appropriately to staff and management throughout the organization.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• Directly supervise assigned accounting staff.
• Provides leadership, coaching, and performance feedback to ensure departmental goals are met.
• Assigns duties, reviews work for accuracy and compliance and ensures timely completion of accounting tasks.
• Conduct regular team meetings to communicate departmental updates and encourage collaboration.
• Participates in hiring, onboarding, training, and development of accounting staff.
• Perform performance evaluations, address performance issues, and recommend disciplinary actions when necessary.
• Ensures adherence to internal controls, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Encourages continuous improvement and professional development among team members.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree required (accounting or finance).
• 7 - 10 years related accounting experience with 3+ years supervisory experience
• CPA or equivalent preferred.

Travel required: 10%

Work environment:

Office Demands

Typically works in an office environment with adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level.

Most work requires normal physical effort.

Requires moderate use of personal computer (word processing and spreadsheets) for compiling reports, statistical data, composing memoranda and other similar documents.
