About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to lead the day-to-day accounting operations of our growing company. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely transaction processing, monthly close, financial reporting, and maintenance of a strong system of accounting records and internal controls.
The Accounting Manager will directly lead a team of 3–5 accounting professionals, providing direction, coaching, workflow management, and professional development. This position serves as the operational backbone of the accounting department and partners closely with the Finance Director on budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and other strategic initiatives.
This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting leader who enjoys being hands-on, improving processes, developing people, and using financial information to support operational decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Department Management
- Directly supervise, train, coach, and develop a team of 3–5 accounting professionals.
- Assign workflows, manage schedules and deadlines, and conduct performance evaluations.
- Oversee the daily operations and organization of the accounting department.
- Maintain and improve documented accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for day-to-day accounting matters, escalating significant issues to the Finance Director.
- Coordinate cross-training and backup coverage across accounting functions to reduce key-person risk.
- Support recruiting, onboarding, and succession planning for the accounting team.
Accounting Operations & Transactions
- Oversee accounts payable processing to ensure timely payments and capture available discounts.
- Manage accounts receivable and collections activities, escalating past-due accounts as appropriate.
- Review customer accounts and recommend appropriate resolution of significantly past-due balances, including collection action or write-offs.
- Review and record payroll entries to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Review and manage third-party credit card and financed-equipment statements and related accounts.
- Prepare and submit monthly workers' compensation documentation and supporting details.
- Perform or review monthly bank reconciliations and balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure general ledger accuracy and integrity.
- Maintain an organized, audit-ready accounting filing and electronic document-retention system.
- Monitor and maintain effective internal controls over accounting transactions.
- Prepare pro forma financial statements and ad hoc financial analyses as requested by the Finance Director.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Lead the preparation of timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for review by the Finance Director.
- Calculate and report financial and operating metrics and KPIs.
- Support the Finance Director in developing the annual budget and periodic forecasts.
- Prepare budget-to-actual and forecast variance analyses and explain significant variances.
- Produce management cost reports and departmental reporting packages.
- Provide financial analysis to support pricing decisions, contract negotiations, and other operational decisions.
Compliance & Audit
- Assist the Finance Director in monitoring debt levels and compliance with debt covenants.
- Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal reporting requirements, including sales/use tax, business personal property tax, and licensing requirements.
- Compile supporting schedules and documentation for the company's outside tax firm for year-end tax planning and preparation.
- Support the annual financial statement audit, review, or compilation, as applicable.
- Maintain compliance with company record-retention policies and applicable accounting standards.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 5–8+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
- At least 2 years of direct experience supervising accounting staff.
- Proficiency in NetSuite is required.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial modeling.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and internal control principles.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and team-development skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred:
- Accounting experience within the construction industry.
- Hands-on experience with construction accounting and job costing.
What Success Looks Like
In this role, success means the accounting department operates accurately, efficiently, and on schedule. You will build a strong, accountable team; maintain reliable financial records and controls; deliver timely reporting; and proactively identify opportunities to improve accounting processes.
You will work closely with the Finance Director to ensure the accounting function provides the accurate financial information needed to support operational and strategic decisions.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Primarily office-based work with frequent sitting and computer use.
- Occasional standing and walking.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for computer and office-related tasks.
- Frequent talking and listening in the performance of job duties.
- Regular visual acuity required to read information and operate a computer and keyboard.
