💼 The Role

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Accountant to own day-to-day accounting operations for a US-headquartered fintech with a Canadian entity. Reporting directly to the COO, this role owns accounts receivable and accounts payable, the monthly close across multiple entities, the US multi-state sales tax function, and the annual financial statement audit.

This is a sole-contributor role with full functional ownership. You will be the only accountant in the business, working directly with the COO, and partnering with Sales and Client Success to get billing right at the source. You will have the autonomy to run the function your way and the responsibility to document how it runs.

The ideal candidate is resourceful and self-directed: someone who pulls the numbers they need from Salesforce and signed contracts, goes directly to the person who closed the deal, and brings the COO decisions rather than questions.

🧠 What You'll Do

Revenue, Billing & Accounts Receivable

• Own the monthly billing cycle end to end: recurring SaaS subscriptions, implementation fees, expansion and upsell items, and third-party passthroughs.

• Interpret signed client contracts to determine correct billing, including minimums, tiered unit pricing, annual escalators, passthrough treatment, and go-live timing.

• Source billing inputs independently from Salesforce, contract files, and the Sales or Client Success owner who closed the deal.

• Reconcile third-party vendor invoices against amounts rebilled to clients, and investigate variances before they reach the client.

• Own AR collections: aging review, client follow-up, and timely escalation of at-risk balances.

• Prepare invoices for COO review and release.

Accounts Payable

• Own AP intake, vendor coding, and entry; maintain written vendor-to-GL coding standards.

• Prepare payment runs for COO approval and manage vendor relationships, statements, and billing disputes.

• Keep AP current so that no vendor relationship is disrupted by a missed or late payment.

US Sales Tax & Compliance

• Own the US multi-state sales tax function: nexus monitoring, registrations, and monthly and quarterly filings.

• Administer Avalara, including the billing system integration, and reconcile taxable sales to filed returns each period as a standing control.

• Collect and maintain exemption certificates for tax-exempt credit union clients.

• Manage voluntary disclosure agreements, state notices, and state tax audits.

• Support Canadian corporate tax filings and US federal and state returns with external advisors.

Month-End Close & Reporting

• Own the full close cycle across the US parent, its Canadian entity, and its subsidiary.

• Maintain recurring schedules: deferred revenue and implementation fee amortization, prepaid expenses, referral fee accruals, and sales commission amortization.

• Allocate payroll and benefits by department across US and Canadian payroll, including CAD translation and RRSP remittance reconciliation.

• Investigate and explain month-over-month variance by department without being asked, distinguishing real movement from timing artifacts.

• Produce the monthly KPI package for the board.

External Audit

• Serve as primary point of contact for the annual financial statement audit.

• Prepare PBC schedules and workpapers, respond to auditor requests, and post audit adjustments.

• Maintain rollforward schedules that tie to the general ledger year over year.

• Treat audited financial statements as controlled documents and route all external distribution through the COO.

Process & Documentation

• Build and maintain written documentation for every recurring process, including the month-end close checklist, vendor coding rules, departmental mapping, and billing logic.

• Identify recurring error sources and fix them at the root rather than correcting them each month.

• Recommend and implement improvements to systems and workflows as the business scales.

🎯 What You Bring

• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including full ownership of a month-end close (must have).

• Hands-on US multi-state sales tax experience: nexus determination, state registrations, filings, exemption certificate management, and voluntary disclosure agreements (must have).

• Working knowledge of Avalara or a comparable sales tax engine, including its integration with a billing system (must have).

• US GAAP revenue recognition under ASC 606 applied to multi-element SaaS contracts, specifically implementation fee deferral and principal-versus-agent analysis for passthrough revenue (must have).

• Experience in a multi-entity environment with cross-border operations and foreign currency translation.

• Experience owning or substantially supporting an external financial statement audit.

• Proficiency with QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, and a billing platform; Zoho and Salesforce a plus.

• Demonstrated ability to work without supervision: comfortable pulling data from a CRM, reading a signed contract, and going directly to the deal owner for an answer.

• Evidence of process documentation you wrote and maintained. Candidates should be prepared to share a work sample, such as a close checklist or procedure you authored.

• CPA (Canada or US) or equivalent practical experience.

• SaaS or fintech experience strongly preferred; experience serving credit unions or community banks is a plus.

Salary Range

$115,000 – $135,000 CAD
