Tax Accountant
Fiduciary Trust International (FTI) is hiring a Tax Accountant to join its high-net-worth tax services team in NYC. This preparation-focused role will have primary responsibility for complex federal, state, and local individual income tax returns, family investment partnership and private foundation returns, together with related work papers and compliance deliverables. The Tax Accountant will work closely with senior tax professionals.
How You Will Add Value
- Prepare complex federal, state, and local individual income tax returns for high-net-worth clients, including Form 1040 and multi-state filings.
- Prepare federal and state partnership income tax returns, including Form 1065, for family investment partnerships and related entities.
- Prepare and maintain detailed tax workpapers; reconcile source documents to the workpapers and tax returns; and clearly document positions, assumptions, and open items for senior review.
- Analyze complex investment reporting, including Schedule K-1 data and multi-state filing requirements, and elevate technical or judgmental matters to the senior team.
- Conduct focused tax research on issues arising during return preparation and summarize conclusions and supporting authority for senior consideration.
- Manage workflow and deadlines for an assigned portfolio of tax returns, including tracking outstanding information and coordinating deliverables with clients and internal partners.
- Communicate routine document requests, status updates, and tax compliance matters to clients under senior oversight.
- Prepare estimated tax calculations, extensions, payment vouchers, and supporting schedules, and assist with the tax payment process.
- Assist with tax notices, amended returns, and federal and state tax authority inquiries.
- Assist with gift tax and private foundation returns as assigned; experience with Forms 709 and 990-PF is a plus.
- Collate completed tax returns and supporting documents for client delivery and signature, and maintain organized electronic tax files.
What Will Help You Be Successful
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA or EA designation or progress toward obtaining a CPA license is preferred.
- 4-8 years of tax preparation experience, preferably in public accounting, private client tax, or wealth management tax services.
- Strong experience preparing complex federal and state individual income tax returns for high-net-worth clients, including multi-state filings.
- Experience preparing partnership income tax returns, preferably for family investment partnerships or investment entities.
- Experience with gift tax and private foundation returns is a plus.
- Experience with CCH Axcess Tax, CCH Scan and BNA Income Tax Planner preferred.
- Strong Excel skills and proficiency with Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Outlook.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and follow-up skills, with careful attention to detail.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate tax compliance matters professionally with clients and internal partners.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments independently and collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to work additional hours, including some weekends, during peak filing periods, generally late February through mid-April and September through mid-October.
Work Schedule & Location: This role is based in New York, NY and operates under a hybrid working model, blending in-office collaboration with remote work flexibility.
