Position Summary
The Senior Manager, Project Accounting will lead the project accounting function for a rapidly growing portfolio of utility-scale renewable energy and electrical infrastructure projects. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, project cost control, revenue recognition, forecasting, cash flow management, and compliance with company policies and GAAP.
The ideal candidate combines strong construction accounting expertise with leadership skills and a hands-on approach. This position requires regular travel to project sites to work alongside field leadership, validate financial performance, improve reporting accuracy, and strengthen operational partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
Project Financial Management
- Lead financial oversight of multiple utility-scale EPC projects from notice to proceed through final closeout.
- Review project costs, commitments, forecasts, and profitability.
- Monitor budgets, change orders, contingencies, and project margins.
- Partner with Project Managers to develop accurate monthly forecasts.
- Analyze labor productivity, equipment utilization, subcontractor performance, and material costs.
- Identify financial risks and recommend corrective actions.
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Oversee monthly project accounting close process.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and percentage-of-completion (ASC 606) revenue recognition.
- Review project WIP schedules and earned revenue calculations.
- Prepare executive financial reporting and project performance dashboards.
- Ensure accurate accruals, journal entries, cost allocations, and reconciliations.
- Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
Operational Partnership
- Serve as the primary finance partner for Operations leadership.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings and monthly operations reviews.
- Conduct regular site visits to validate project financial performance.
- Collaborate with Procurement on purchase commitments and vendor performance.
- Work closely with Contracts on change order tracking and billing.
Leadership
- Lead and mentor Project Accountants and Project Financial Analysts.
- Develop accounting processes that improve efficiency and scalability.
- Build standardized reporting across projects.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives using technology and automation.
- Assist with ERP optimization and reporting enhancements.
Risk Management
- Monitor contract compliance.
- Evaluate financial exposure related to subcontractors and suppliers.
- Ensure timely customer billings and collections.
- Review project cash flow projections.
- Support external audits and lender reporting requirements.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 8+ years of construction or project accounting experience.
- 3+ years managing accounting teams.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Construction accounting
- Percentage-of-completion accounting
- ASC 606 revenue recognition
- WIP reporting
- Cost accounting
- Budgeting and forecasting
- Experience supporting EPC, heavy civil, infrastructure, utilities, or industrial construction projects.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Experience with ERP systems such as NetSuite, Viewpoint Vista, CMiC, Oracle, SAP, or similar.
- Ability to travel approximately 50% to project locations nationwide.
Preferred
- CPA or CMA certification.
- Experience with utility-scale solar, battery storage, substations, transmission, or power generation projects.
- Experience working for an EPC contractor.
- Familiarity with lien waivers, retainage, progress billing, and subcontract administration.
- Experience implementing financial process improvements.
