Senior Accountant

Nonprofit community developer and affordable home builder seeks a highly motivated individual and experienced Senior Accountant to join their Neighborhood Programs. Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles County (NHS) serves as a catalyst for local residents, business and government representatives to work together to build stronger neighborhoods, improve the quality of life for low to moderate income families and revitalize communities into neighborhoods of choice.

The Senior Accountant under direction, performs a variety of professional accounting work and financial analysis of above average difficulty in maintenance of financial records; assists the Controller in accurately reconciling the general ledger; performs special internal audits and special accounting studies; has responsible charge of assigned functional areas of the accounting system; and performs related work as required.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties that are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these duties and/or may perform similar related duties not listed here. The Senior Accountant performs a wide range of advanced accounting, fund accounting, financial analysis, auditing and financial reporting work; maintains financial records; collects source documents from several areas; records information on various spreadsheets; prepares journal vouchers from various sources. This position also fulfills bank and fiscal agent reconciliations; produces proof of cash statement containing reconciliations and summaries of cash; prepares memos as required for clarification; reconciles accounts receivable and deposits; verifies refunds through accounts payable. This role coordinates year-end work papers for auditors; provides copies of bank statements and reconciliations; compiles schedules of year-end cash, internal service revenues compared to expenses, accrued liabilities, deposits, accounts payable, returned checks, prepaid and other assets. Plus this role also prepares fixed assets for balancing to the general ledger; evaluates items as to their eligibility as fixed assets; enters fixed assets into computer system; reconciles computer reports.

 Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration or finance is required since this role conducts assigned internal audits  and special accounting studies assigned by the Controller, analyzes various general ledger and subsidiary activities to understand  account activity or prepare spreadsheets; prepares reports of findings and recommendations. The Senior Accountant implements  a wide variety of cost accounting related to capital projects; confers with appropriate departments regarding projects; records  construction and labor costs in detail and summary forms; maintains accounting records. This role also collects and compiles information for assigned studies and prepares summaries, ad hoc reports and recommendations, as appropriate; assists in the development of accounting systems, procedures, policies and manuals, and performs related work as required.

The required job duties are normally performed in an office environment and the duties are essentially sedentary work consisting of occasional walking, standing, lifting and/or carrying 10 lbs.

Knowledge of:

- Advanced accounting principles, practices and methods

- Methods and techniques of financial analysis and research procedures

- Methods and techniques of auditing

- Data processing as it relates to financial and fiscal record keeping and reporting

- Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers and related software

- Five (5)+ years of experience in accounting

Ability to:

- Make arithmetic computations quickly and accurately

- Proficient in Excel (Pivot Table, V-lookup etc.)

- Excellent oral and written communication skills

- Operate a variety of office equipment including computers and applicable software applications

- Classify fiscal documents and transactions

- Perform statistical and financial analysis

- Gather, organize and analyze financial information and arrive at sound conclusions

- Prepare clear and concise reports and other materials

- Read, understand, interpret government contracts, policies, rules guidelines and professional practices related to accounting,                         

   financial and fiscal practices and record keeping

- Identify problems, define and recommend alternative solutions and implement appropriate solutions

- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
