Senior Accountant

The Senior Accountant is a key member of the Finance and Accounting team responsible for performing complex accounting activities and supporting the accurate and timely financial reporting of multiple nonprofit entities. This position has primary responsibility for assigned month-end close activities, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, financial statement preparation, fixed assets, accruals, deferrals, and supporting schedules.

Working in a fast-paced, multi-entity shared-services environment, the Senior Accountant partners closely with the Controller, Chief Financial Officer, accounting staff, and organizational leadership to maintain the integrity of financial information, strengthen accounting processes, support budgeting and year-end activities, and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical accounting knowledge, exceptional attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to independently manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

General Accounting & Financial Reporting

• Perform full-accrual accounting activities for assigned entities and departments in accordance with GAAP and organizational accounting policies.
• Manage assigned components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process for multiple nonprofit entities.
• Prepare and review journal entries, general ledger activity, supporting schedules, and account analyses.
• Prepare accurate and timely monthly financial statements and supporting financial reports.
• Perform detailed balance sheet reconciliations, research discrepancies, and resolve outstanding items.
• Review and reconcile bank accounts and other financial accounts monthly.
• Maintain accurate accounting for prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, deferred revenue, payroll liabilities, reserves, intercompany activity, and other balance sheet accounts.
• Support departmental and entity-level accounting and financial reporting requirements.
• Assist in maintaining appropriate intercompany accounting and reconciliation processes across affiliated entities.

Fixed Assets & Financial Schedules

• Maintain fixed asset records and related supporting documentation.
• Prepare and maintain depreciation and amortization schedules.
• Review capital expenditures and ensure transactions are properly classified and recorded.
• Prepare and maintain recurring accounting schedules, reconciliations, and reports necessary to support the general ledger and financial statements.
• Maintain complete, organized, and audit-ready supporting documentation.

Budgeting & Financial Analysis

• Assist the Controller and Chief Financial Officer with the development, preparation, and administration of annual operating and capital budgets.
• Support budget-to-actual reporting and assist with researching significant financial variances.
• Provide financial information and analysis to department and entity leadership as requested.
• Assist management with special financial projects, reporting requirements, and financial analysis.

Year-End Close & Audit Support

• Partner with the Controller and Finance leadership in completing year-end close activities.
• Prepare account reconciliations, schedules, supporting documentation, and financial information required for the annual financial statement audit.
• Respond to auditor requests and assist with the timely resolution of audit questions.
• Support tax, regulatory, and other financial reporting requirements as assigned.

Accounting Operations & Shared Services

• Collaborate with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll, banking, and other Finance team members to resolve accounting and transactional issues.
• Review accounting activity for completeness, accuracy, appropriate coding, and supporting documentation.
• Assist with accounting-related aspects of employee benefit programs, including 401(k) employer match accruals and related liability reconciliations.
• Partner with operational and departmental leaders to research and resolve financial questions.
• Promote consistency and accuracy across the organization's shared-services accounting processes.
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting procedures, internal controls, financial reporting, and departmental efficiencies.
• Provide accounting guidance and support to Finance team members as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting practices.
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage month-end close activities and complex general ledger accounts.
• Strong understanding of accrual accounting, account reconciliations, fixed assets, depreciation, amortization, prepaid expenses, accruals, deferrals, and financial statement preparation.
• Ability to manage accounting responsibilities across multiple entities, departments, and cost centers.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to research and resolve complex accounting issues.

• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookup functions, formulas, data analysis, and reconciliation tools.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and financial/accounting software.
• Ability to learn and effectively utilize new financial systems and technology.
• Sound professional judgment and ability to appropriately handle confidential and sensitive financial information.

Education & Experience

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field, with Accounting strongly preferred.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of progressively responsible full-cycle accounting experience.
• Demonstrated experience with general ledger accounting, month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
• Working knowledge of GAAP and applicable accounting standards.

Preferred

• Experience working within a nonprofit or tax-exempt organization.
• Exposure to public accounting and/or Big 4 internship.
• Experience supporting multiple legal entities or business units within a centralized accounting environment.
• Experience with nonprofit financial reporting, budgeting, audit preparation, and year-end close.
• Experience working with intercompany transactions and reconciliations.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities.
• Experience with Yooz or similar accounts payable/invoice automation technology.
• CPA designation, CPA eligibility, or progress toward professional accounting certification is a plus.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment.
• Standard business hours are generally Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• Periodic evening or weekend work may be required during month-end close, year-end close, audits, budgeting cycles, special projects, or other business-critical periods.
• Occasional travel to Morgan’s affiliated locations, meetings, or organizational events may be required.
• Regularly operates a computer and other standard office equipment.
• Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
• Ability to move throughout office and organizational facilities as needed.
• Ability to occasionally lift and carry office materials or supplies weighing up to approximately 20 pounds.
