Primary Function:
The Sales & Use Tax Director leads and manages all indirect tax functions for Dashiell Corporation, including sales and use tax compliance, audit management, tax planning, and operational tax strategy across multiple states and jurisdictions in support of engineering, construction, and field service operations. The position will be based in our Houston, TX office located at 12301 Kurland Drive, Houston, TX 77034 and will report to Dashiell’s CFO.
Duties & Responsibilities
Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a small indirect tax team responsible for sales and use tax compliance and reporting.
- Establish departmental priorities, workflows, and performance expectations.
- Foster strong collaboration across project development and sales, operations, procurement, and project teams.
- Coordinate with Quanta Services tax leadership and affiliated companies on indirect tax matters, best practices, and process alignment.
Sales & Use Tax Compliance
- Direct all sales and use tax compliance activities across multiple jurisdictions and legal entities.
- Oversee preparation, review, and filing of monthly, quarterly, and annual indirect tax returns.
- Ensure timely remittance of tax liabilities and compliance with state and local reporting requirements.
- Manage exemption certificate administration, retention, and audit readiness.
- Monitor and interpret changes in tax laws affecting engineering, construction, utility, and field service operations.
Strategic & Cross-Functional Advisory and Support
- Provide strategic tax guidance related to construction contracts, procurement structures, and project execution.
- Analyze taxability of materials, labor, fabrication, rentals, subcontractor services, and interstate transactions.
- Advise project development, sales, and operational teams on indirect tax implications for EPC, lump-sum, cost-plus, and time-and-material contracts.
- Engage in contract review and bid processes to identify and mitigate indirect tax exposure, working with legal to refine proposed contract language.
- Collaborate with procurement and operations teams to improve tax planning and vendor compliance.
- Provide guidance to executive leadership on indirect tax risks, opportunities, and emerging trends.
Audit & Risk Management
- Lead state and local sales/use tax audits, inquiries, and assessments.
- Serve as the primary contact with taxing authorities and external auditors.
- Develop audit defense strategies and negotiate favorable resolutions.
- Identify opportunities to reduce tax exposure and strengthen internal controls.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Drive continuous improvement of indirect tax processes, controls, and automation initiatives.
- Partner with accounting and IT teams to optimize ERP tax functionality and reporting accuracy.
- Support implementation and maintenance of new ERP systems and associated tax tools.
- Develop and maintain tax policies, procedures, and internal training materials.
- Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.

- Protect company margins by minimizing indirect tax exposure across EPC, lump-sum, cost-plus, and time-and-material contracts.
- Strengthen bid competitiveness by identifying and mitigating sales/use tax risk during contract review and proposal development.
- Reduce audit liabilities and penalties through proactive compliance, exemption certificate management, and effective audit defense.
- Enable confident, tax-informed decisions across project development, sales, procurement, and operations leadership.
- Improve the efficiency and accuracy of indirect tax operations through ERP optimization and automation.
Minimum Qualifications / Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field required.
- CPA, Master of Science in Taxation (MST), or equivalent professional certification preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive sales and use tax or indirect tax experience.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience managing a team required.
- Experience within construction, engineering, EPC, utility, or industrial services industries strongly preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of multi-state contractor taxation and construction-related sales/use tax regulations.
- Experience managing state and local tax audits and negotiating with taxing authorities.
- Proficiency with ERP systems and tax automation platforms such as Vertex, Avalara, SAP, or Oracle.
