Payroll & Human Resources Generalist (Mid-Level)
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Payroll & Human Resources Generalist with 5+ years of progressive HR and payroll experience. This role is responsible for managing payroll operations for both union and non-union employees while supporting key HR functions including compliance, employee relations, onboarding, benefits administration, and policy implementation. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, knowledgeable in labor laws and union agreements, and capable of balancing payroll accuracy with employee-focused HR support.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Administration
- Process weekly, bi-weekly, and/or semi-monthly payroll for union and non-union employees.
- Ensure accurate calculation of wages, overtime, deductions, and benefits.
- Administer certified payroll and prevailing wage reporting when required.
- Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Coordinate payroll audits and year-end processing, including W-2s and tax reporting.
- Work closely with accounting and operations teams to resolve payroll discrepancies.
Human Resources
- Manage employee onboarding, orientation, and offboarding processes.
- Maintain employee personnel files and HRIS records.
- Assist with benefits administration, enrollment, and employee questions.
- Support employee relations matters and provide guidance on company policies.
- Coordinate recruiting activities, interview scheduling, and new hire documentation.
- Assist with performance management and employee development initiatives.
- Assist in development of companies people strategy
Compliance & Labor Relations
- Ensure compliance with employment laws, wage and hour regulations, and company policies.
- Interpret and administer collective bargaining agreements for union employees.
- Maintain compliance with EEO, FMLA, ADA, OSHA, workers' compensation, and other employment regulations.
- Assist with audits, investigations, and documentation requests.
- Monitor regulatory changes and recommend policy updates as needed.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of payroll and human resources experience.
- Experience processing payroll for both union and non-union employees.
- Working knowledge of labor laws, employment regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Experience with payroll systems and HRIS platforms.
- Strong understanding of collective bargaining agreements and union reporting requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting, or related field.
- PHR, SHRM-CP, CPP, or similar certification preferred.
- Experience in construction, manufacturing, transportation, or other unionized environments.
- Experience with prevailing wage and certified payroll reporting.
