This Is More Than a CFO Role
In rural Montana, the Chief Financial Officer is not simply responsible for financial reports and budgets.
The CFO helps protect the long-term stability of an organization that may be one of the most essential employers, economic anchors, emergency resources, and community institutions in the region.
Healthcare finance in Montana requires strong technical knowledge, sound judgment, adaptability, and the ability to communicate clearly with executive leaders, department managers, boards, employees, public agencies, tribal partners, and community stakeholders.
The strongest rural CFOs understand that every financial decision connects directly to patient access, workforce stability, housing, transportation, infrastructure, community trust, and the organization's ability to continue serving its region.
They also understand the financial realities of delivering care across large geographic areas, supporting services in smaller communities, maintaining essential facilities and equipment, recruiting hard-to-fill positions, and operating in areas where weather, wildfire, distance, and limited transportation may affect staffing, supplies, and patient access.
What You May Lead
Responsibilities will vary by organization and may include:
Providing strategic and operational leadership for the organization's financial functions
Developing budgets, forecasts, financial plans, and long-term sustainability strategies
Overseeing accounting, financial reporting, cash flow, audits, and internal controls
Supporting revenue cycle performance, reimbursement strategy, payer relations, and collections
Monitoring financial performance and communicating results to executive leadership, governing boards, tribal leadership, or other oversight bodies
Managing relationships with auditors, banks, vendors, government agencies, grantors, and external partners
Supporting capital planning, grants, funding initiatives, facility needs, workforce housing projects, and major organizational investments
Partnering with operational and clinical leaders to improve performance and resource stewardship
Ensuring compliance with applicable financial, regulatory, grant, and reporting requirements
Supporting financial oversight across multiple facilities, clinics, communities, or regions when required
Helping the organization navigate growth, transition, turnaround, leadership change, or financial uncertainty
Evaluating the financial impact of workforce shortages, travel, temporary staffing, housing, equipment, weather, and supply-chain challenges
Supporting reimbursement strategies involving Medicare, Medicaid, grants, federal funding, and other revenue sources
Helping ensure essential healthcare services remain financially sustainable and available closer to home
What You Will Bring
Qualifications will vary by opportunity, but organizations may seek:
Progressive healthcare finance leadership experience
Experience as a CFO, Vice President of Finance, Controller, Finance Director, or comparable senior leader
Strong knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, accounting, audits, reimbursement, cash management, and financial reporting
Experience presenting complex financial information clearly to boards, executive teams, department leaders, tribal partners, and community stakeholders
An understanding of rural and frontier healthcare operations, reimbursement, workforce challenges, and service-line sustainability
Experience with Critical Access Hospitals, FQHCs, Rural Health Clinics, public hospital districts, tribal healthcare organizations, regional health systems, long-term care providers, or community healthcare organizations
Experience supporting multi-site organizations or services spread across significant geographic distances may be valuable
Experience with grants, federal funding, rural reimbursement, tribal healthcare finance, or public-sector reporting may be preferred for some opportunities
A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, healthcare administration, or a related field
A master's degree, CPA, or other advanced credential may be preferred for some opportunities
A collaborative, transparent, practical, and relationship-focused leadership style
The ability to relocate or travel regionally when required
Specific qualifications, reporting relationships, travel expectations, and credential requirements will depend on the organization and position.
Types of Opportunities
Opportunities may include:
Permanent Chief Financial Officer positions
Interim Chief Financial Officer assignments
Vice President of Finance roles
Controller or Finance Director positions
Regional or multi-site financial leadership
Community health center financial leadership
Public hospital district financial leadership
Tribal healthcare financial leadership
Long-term care or senior care financial leadership
Temporary-to-permanent opportunities
Financial turnaround or stabilization assignments
Short-term executive support during a transition or vacancy
The schedule, compensation, relocation assistance, travel requirements, organizational priorities, reporting structure, governance structure, and employment arrangement will be explained before you decide whether to move forward with a specific opportunity.
Why Rural Montana?
Montana's healthcare organizations serve communities surrounded by mountain ranges, open plains, ranchland, farmland, forests, rivers, reservations, and long stretches of open road.
Some communities are connected by major highways. Others are hours from larger medical centers, airports, specialty services, and additional healthcare resources.
These distances create financial and operational challenges that require thoughtful leadership.
The cost of staffing, transportation, housing, facilities, equipment, medical supplies, and maintaining access across rural and frontier regions can be significant. At the same time, rural healthcare organizations carry an enormous responsibility to the people and communities they serve.
Strong financial leadership helps protect emergency care, outpatient services, long-term care, behavioral health, primary care access, tribal healthcare services, and other essential services that patients may otherwise have to travel long distances to receive.
Serving as a CFO in rural Montana offers the opportunity to see the direct impact of your work, build meaningful relationships, support thoughtful growth, and help protect healthcare access for entire communities and regions.
You may help stabilize an organization, improve reimbursement, strengthen internal controls, secure funding, support workforce housing, guide capital investments, or create a financial strategy that allows essential services to remain available.
The work requires resilience, adaptability, creativity, sound judgment, and a genuine commitment to the organization's mission.
