Interim Corporate Controller

About the Opportunity

Our client is an owner-managed specialty trade contractor operating in the Toronto and GTA construction market, with over a decade in business serving both commercial and residential clients. The company runs project-based work across steel framing, drywall, and insulation, and has built its own in-house system to track jobs and expenses at the project level.

This is a newly created Interim Controller role, brought on to take over the finance function end to end. The business is largely paperless and operates on QuickBooks alongside its in-house job-tracking system, and there's a body of cleanup work to bring records current. You'll start on-site to learn the systems and processes directly from the team, then transition to a remote working arrangement.

This is a full ownership role: payroll, AP, billing, collections, WIP, cash flow, and KPI reporting all sit with you, with a bookkeeper handling month-end reconciliation and a CPA for external review. If you like operating with full scope and building structure where there's currently gap, this is a hands-on mandate with real autonomy from day one.

Key Responsibilities

• Run weekly payroll, including union remittances and maintenance of employee payroll records
• Issue T4s
• Process accounts payable (payments are processed directly into the system rather than pre-entered)
• Reconcile supplier statements
• Track and upload project-based expenses across active jobs
• Prepare and issue progress invoices
• Monitor collections and follow up on outstanding receivables
• Prepare WIP schedules across multiple concurrent jobs
• Report on cash flow management and forward projections
• Build and maintain a dashboard tracking critical company KPIs
• Coordinate with the company's external bookkeeper on month-end reconciliations and ensure the system is current
• Manage quarterly WSIB and HST remittances
• Support cleanup of existing records across QuickBooks and the in-house project system

What You Bring

• Experience owning full-cycle accounting for a construction or project-based business
• Hands-on experience with union payroll and remittances
• Strong QuickBooks proficiency
• Comfort working within a custom, in-house project-tracking system alongside standard accounting software
• Experience preparing WIP schedules and cash flow projections in a project-based environment
• Ability to work on-site initially, transitioning to a fully remote arrangement
• Comfortable stepping into a paperless environment with cleanup work and coordinating directly with external accounting support

Nice to Have

• Prior experience in drywall, framing, insulation, or a related trade subcontracting business
• Experience building KPI dashboards for ownership-level reporting
