About the Opportunity

Our client, a PE-backed environmental services organization, is seeking an experienced Interim Controller to stabilize and elevate their finance function during a critical period of change. Reporting to the senior leadership team, you will manage the month-end close, ensure the integrity of the balance sheet, and drive discipline around financial reporting in a NetSuite environment.

You will work closely with the existing Controller and team, guiding and mentoring them while putting in place clear, repeatable processes that support accurate and timely financial statements. This is a hands-on mandate where you’ll roll up your sleeves to resolve legacy issues, support an upcoming interim audit, and build a more robust close framework that can scale with the business. It’s an opportunity to make an immediate impact and leave a lasting foundation for the team.

Key Responsibilities

• Complete and review all balance sheet reconciliations, including AP, prepaids, accruals, WIP and other key accounts.
• Manage the month-end close process to deliver timely, accurate financial statements.
• Diagnose and resolve issues causing delays or inconsistencies in the financial statements.
• Establish, document, and implement standardized monthly close processes.
• Coach the existing team to improve rigor, discipline, and accountability in the close process.
• Support and prepare for the interim audit (and upcoming summer audit) with the external auditors.
• Ensure project accounting is correctly configured in NetSuite and Project Accounting system.
• Monitor adherence to new processes and controls, making adjustments as needed to improve efficiency and accuracy.
• Gradually transition appropriate work to more junior team members as processes become stable and repeatable.
• Other ad-hoc tasks as required
• Deliver on the 30/60/90-day objectives:

30 days – Ensure the balance sheet is properly brought over from JIRA to NetSuite and complete balance sheet account reconciliations

60 days – Embed and enforce disciplined processes so the team follows a structured month-end close.

90 days – Achieve a consistent close with financial statements finalized by the 15th of each month.

What You Bring

• Proven experience as a Controller or Senior Finance Leader in a PE-backed or fast-growing environment.
• Strong, hands-on month-end close expertise, including full balance sheet reconciliation ownership.
• Demonstrated experience resolving complex accounting and reconciliation issues and making financial statements “make sense.”
• Experience implementing or optimizing ERP-based close processes; NetSuite experience strongly preferred.
• Background working with project accounting, including labour and disbursement tracking within an ERP (NetSuite).
• Track record of designing, documenting, and enforcing close processes, controls, and review cycles.
• Prior experience preparing for and supporting interim and year-end audits, ideally with mid-tier or Big 4 audit firms.
• Ability to coach, support, and upskill existing finance leaders and team members, while constructively increasing rigour and accountability.
• Comfort stepping into an environment with legacy system migration issues (e.g., from JIRA) and driving resolution under tight timelines.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to partner effectively with senior leadership and external auditors.
