Financial Leadership Partner (CFO Level Consultant)

The Herring Group is a professional services and data analytics firm. We work with owners of landscape companies who have built something real and want to keep it without being crushed by it. 

We optimize two margins, not one. 

• Profit margin. We put our clients on a disciplined Path to 12% profitability. Most landscape businesses run at 3 to 7%. The solution is not a mystery; it is a system. We build the system. 

• Life margin. If the owner cannot take a three-week vacation without the business wobbling, we have not done our job. Profit that requires the owner's presence to operate is not profit. It is a salary with extra steps. 

These margins are not separate goals. They reinforce each other. A business that cannot give its owner a life cannot give its employees one either, and neither carries 12% for long. 

Autonomy and accountability. We help our clients build teams that think, decide, and own outcomes. 

What you would actually do 

• Hold a portfolio of SMB clients (companies with $3M to $50M in revenue) as their outsourced financial leader. Own the models, forecasts, dashboards, and KPIs that leadership actually uses, not the ones that live in a forgotten folder. Help owners and management teams every month translate numbers into decisions. 
• Push them on pricing they have been afraid to raise, labor efficiency they have been afraid to measure, and margin they did not know was leaking. 
• Help us get sharper, too. Every client’s engagement is a chance to improve our methodology, our delivery, and our tools so the next client benefits from everything we have learned on this one. 

Who this is for 

• You have done this work for 10 to 20 years, with titles like CFO, Controller, FP&A Director, Principal Consultant, or Business Owner. You have worked inside SMBs, not just for them. You know what the owner is actually worried about at 5:47 a.m. 
• You can build a model in your sleep, but models are not what you are most proud of. You are proud of a conversation that changed a decision that changed a company. 
• You think like a business owner. You have previously owned a business and want back in the game without all the responsibility that comes with it. 
• You do not need everything to be handed to you on a silver platter and you do not mind getting in the weeds if there is a purpose for it.   
• You have thick skin in a professional sense. Clients hire us to tell them what they need to hear, not what they want to hear.  
• You find 30 to 35 focused hours a week more appealing than 50 unfocused ones, and you would rather be paid for results than seat time. 
• You want work that is meaningful, interesting, and challenging with a high degree of autonomy.

• Anyone who wants a W-2 with a ladder to climb. We measure personal success by client success.

The facts 

• Location. Fully remote. Must reside in Texas or Georgia. 
• Commitment. Minimum 30 hours per week, during business hours. 
• Reality. You will manage multiple client engagements at once in a fast-paced consulting environment.  Success in this role requires resilience, sound judgment, personal accountability, and the ability to make progress without constant supervision. We will not pretend otherwise.

• Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, or Economics or an MBA required. 
• Minimum 10 years of experience in financial leadership, with titles such as CFO, Controller, FP&A Director, or Business Owner. 
• Hands-on experience supporting small to mid-sized businesses ($3M to $100M+ in annual revenue). 
• Proven ability to drive profitability improvement, margin expansion, and cash flow optimization through financial analysis. 
• Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, dashboards, and analytics tools. 
• Exceptional communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills. 
• Ability to manage multiple client engagements concurrently in a fast-paced consulting environment. 
• Previous business owner or entrepreneurial experience considered a strong plus. 
• Must reside in Texas or Georgia.
