Finance Manager

Position Status: Full-time (40 hours/week), Permanent
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for a Finance Manager. This role is responsible for supporting financial activities related to accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll, as well as overseeing duties as assigned by senior leadership within the Finance Department. The Finance Manager position requires a high sense of confidentiality as well as advanced knowledge in the areas of finance, accounting, and bookkeeping. The successful candidate will be a motivated, confident, and detail-oriented individual with exceptional interpersonal, relationship building, and leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, update, and adhere to accounting standards, policies, and procedures.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts, produce financial statements on a monthly basis, and perform period end closing duties.
- Perform day-to-day financial activities for accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll as needed.
- Prepare written reports, briefing notes, presentations, and recommendations for the Chief Financial Officer and Executive leadership.
- Collaborate with various departments to forecast budgets and project work plans in cooperation with Finance leadership.
- Maintain financial integrity of departments and affiliates by providing Finance leadership, and funders with required financial statements and reports.
- Meet with the Chief Financial Officer, Directors, and Citizens’ Representatives to finalize details of financial reports at year end. Write corresponding journal entries.
- Ensure the books for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and all other entities are prepared for auditors.
- Coordinate with and assist auditors, including providing supporting documents, answering general inquires, and helping with specific concerns.
- Assist with and/or oversee finance related projects, as assigned by Finance senior leadership.
- Mentor team members through feedback, coaching, and formal evaluations, and provide effective leadership to the team.
- Perform supervisory duties including recruiting and training staff, assigning job duties, and developing and overseeing staff workplans.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders including service providers, internal departments, affiliates, community partners, and the Métis community.
- Maintain a high level of political awareness, cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and confidentiality in all interactions with internal and external stakeholders, and in the handling of all documents and information.
- Other duties as required or assigned.
Skills & Competencies
- Working knowledge of financial forecasting and budgeting, financial accountability and control processes, auditing procedures, financial data storage and financial report analysis.
- Strong knowledge of applicable Finance and Accounting regulations, legislation, and best practices.
- Proficient in SAGE 300 (ACCPAC), Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams) and Google Workspace.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Exceptional strategic planning skills, including an ability to establish plans to meet key objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to adhere to strict confidentiality of sensitive information. High level of integrity, ethics, and professionalism.
- Strong organizational, time management, planning and execution skills with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to identify issues and implement creative and strategic solutions to overcome problems.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Recognized strength in leading and engaging teams and creating a culture that promotes development of individual and organizational capacity.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to deal with a wide range of individuals tactfully and diplomatically and produce professional documents.
- Proven track record of building collaborative partnerships with a variety of internal and external stakeholder
- Culturally sensitive and compassionate.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and be adaptable and flexible to changing priorities.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle tense and stressful situations.
- Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture is an asset.
Qualifications
- Degree in accounting, financial management, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a financial role.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a leadership role.
Other Requirements
- Position will be based in Edmonton; in office presence is required.
- Ability to work during regular office hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.
- Ability to work weekends and evenings, as needed.
- Some travel within Alberta is a requirement. Additional out-of-province travel may also occur, with notice.
- Reliable transportation and valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Acceptable attainment of a Clear Police Information Check is required.
