Position Overview
The Rockefeller Foundation's Finance Department shapes strategic decision-making through rigorous financial planning, analysis, accounting, and reporting across the Foundation’s domestic and international operations. The team partners closely with executive leadership, program teams, and external stakeholders to safeguard financial integrity and transparency and responsible stewardship of the Foundation’s resources.
The Director, Financial Accounting & Reporting leads the Foundation’s financial accounting and reporting function, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of financial information across the Foundation and its affiliated entities. The Director provides technical accounting leadership and oversees the global close, consolidated financial reporting, audit, and tax processes, applying sound judgment to complex accounting matters and ensuring consistent standards across entities and regions. Reporting to the Managing Director, Finance & Accounting, the Director leads accounting staff and partners across Finance, Investments, and RF Catalytic Capital to maintain strong financial controls, meet reporting and compliance requirements, and provide reliable financial information for organizational decision-making.
Work Schedule: This role follows a hybrid schedule and is required to be in the office Monday through Thursday.
Pay Range: $190,000 - $205,000. This represents the present low and high end of the Foundation’s pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary based on various factors, including but not limited to experience.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Owns the preparation and integrity of the consolidated financial statements for the Foundation and its affiliated entities, ensuring accuracy and clarity for internal and external stakeholders, including the Board and donors.
- Manages the global month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close calendar across all entities and regional offices, including intercompany eliminations and consolidation entries.
- Leads the development and application of the Foundation’s technical accounting positions, interpreting evolving accounting standards, resolving complex accounting matters, and guiding consistent application across the Finance team.
- Serves as the primary management liaison for the annual financial statement audit, the benefit plan audit, and audits of affiliated entities, owning the audit timetable and the resolution of findings and management letter comments.
- Directs the Foundation's annual tax filings, including federal and excise tax returns, in partnership with external tax advisors.
- Develops and maintains accounting policies and procedures in partnership with the Managing Director, Finance & Accounting, ensuring consistent application across the Finance team.
- Serves as the primary Finance liaison to RF Catalytic Capital’s operations team and external program teams, overseeing RF Catalytic Capital payroll and coordinating accounting and financial reporting requirements across internal and external partners.
- Supervises accounting staff, including investment accounting and accounts receivable/payable functions.
Education, Experience, and Skills
- Generally expected to have 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in accounting and financial reporting, including significant experience leading complex accounting functions or processes.
- Bachelor’s degree required; active CPA license required. Master’s degree preferred.
- Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP, financial statement preparation, consolidation, and technical accounting, with the judgment to interpret complex accounting matters and establish appropriate accounting treatment.
- Experience leading complex, multi-entity financial close and reporting processes, including coordination across business units, entities, or geographic locations.
- Track record of leading external financial statement audits and managing complex audit requirements, findings, and relationships with external auditors.
- Knowledge of tax and regulatory requirements applicable to nonprofit or foundation entities, with experience overseeing tax compliance preferred.
- Success establishing and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and controls that promote accuracy, consistency, and financial integrity.
- Ability to work effectively across functions and with senior stakeholders to resolve complex financial issues and ensure timely, accurate reporting.
- Proficiency in using enterprise financial systems to manage accounting and reporting processes; experience with NetSuite and Salesforce preferred.
- Track record of leading and developing accounting professionals and establishing clear expectations and accountability across a team.
